View Full Version : Purchasing a plow

I've driven someone else's plow for years now and am now purchasing one for myself (he who dies with the most toys...) I'm driving a '05 GM 3500 diesel with dump body and duallies. I went to the snow expo and was turned onto the Western. Originally I had it in my head to go with a stainless blade for no reason other than I hate painting. I think I'm going with the Fisher only because the local shops all have their products.

I went to the Fisher site and did the eMatch. It came back with the HD 8.5’. I called a local dealer. Their price seemed quite a bit higher than what I see posted here. Who has good deals in eastern or central MA?

In any case, they say I can go with the 9’ if I want. If I put a sander on the back will I have any weight issues with this truck?

Back step a moment here. Because I'm starting late and because I don't have any commercial lots (yet) I'm only doing residential right now. I do want to land a couple lots as this has been what I've done and I am more comfortable doing them. I'm wondering what, if any, benefit either plow has over the other in my case (the 9’ v 8.5’ and the X-Blade v HD).

Your input is appreciated.

Well if your going fisher, then defently get the 9' stainless X blade. If I wasn't going blizzard. Thats what I would be getting. Scraps better than any other fisher and looks really cool.

I have a 8.5' on my F-350 dump. Its barely covers the duals. Which is why I am going 8611lp when I can find one. So what ever you buy at least get a 9' wide blade.

Try Tucks Truck in Hudson Ma . I bought my X Blade there . They are having a Fisher snowplow clinic on Nov 5 . The X blade is the way to go scrapes better , and the stainless is really slick !

For your DRW you definitely would want at least 9' blade if you're planning on doing commercial plowing. That include residential too. The 8.5' is barely wide enough and once you start making a turn, your rear wheel will be riding over the snow. My vote would go for the 9' X-blade or the 9.5' V plow, but understand that big dooley and big blade can be difficult and challenging, for some residential drives.

I wouldn't go with anything less than a 9' on that truck either. You'll constantly be cleaning up after yourself on even the slightest of turns. The reason dealers push 8 1/2s is that you can run those without an overwidth permit. Anything over that requires a permit from your DMV.

Dealer support is important, so if Fisher is the only name that is well supported where you are then that is what you should look at.

Thanks everyone. I didn't know that about the rear wheels.

Bill, that is where I got the quote. Are they usually competetive in pricing? The next option would be to send it up to Madigan. Thoughts?

Madigan may not be the cheapest around but I can vouch for their work. They are very good in terms of installation and knowledgeable about their product lines.

I'd like to modify my question here. How does the EZ-V compare to the HD and X-Blade? I'm reading so much information on purchasing from magazines, here, and marketing material that I am getting more unsure each minute.

The fellow down at the dealer was surprised I wanted the X-Blade but said he could put it on. That didn't make me feel too sure about the purchase. Tomorrow is the day it goes on so any last minute advise is appreciated.
