View Full Version : pro Wings, rubber or urethane
What do most of you guys run for edges on your Pro Wings? I've been considering using urathane simply cause the black rubber edges fold back to easily. Would urathane be a good alternative, where can I get some?

Urethane is the way to go,it is much tougher, and wears better than steel. It is flexible enough to ride over obstacles, but won't fold back like rubber.
There are several manufacturers who make them, and people who sell them.Info is available in the dealers\suppliers forum.

I got to thinking about these. I know these rubber flaps are made from some sort of raw material that is available in bulk. They get $40 for a set of two for the rubber replacements. So, I did some research, on something I thought about, and will look into it even futher. My conclusion? A guy can make a whole lot of sets of these out of 1 sheet of mat that is the same material. What is it? Mat for horse stalls. It is hard, revulcanized material...guaranteed not to roll or buckle. There are different grads and different thicknesses of it. The thickest? 3/4 in.. Some is made with a poly vinyl composite in it. Even if it WAS a bit weaker, like I say, a guy can make a whole lot of sets of these for the price of one mat sheet. I'll be at my local TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) in the morning. :zoom
Lets see, you say $40 a set. That takes me 20 minutes to make $40 plowing. I will lay odds you spend more time going to tractor supply then it should take to make enough to buy ready made ones. then there is the time involved in making them, mistakes, tools required. etc. I suspose if you have a lot of time on your hands it could be worth it. But I would reather spent that time with my family.

All you have to do is lay the old one down and trace it. I hand jigsaw to cut it, and drill two holes. That ought to take a whopping 5 minutes. The trip to the TSC is a one time deal (about 10 minutes to get there). These mats are about 3x4. If I was plowing 16 hours a day, 7 days, I could see it. But the fact of the matter is, I'm not...none of us are. As far as family...I make time for that. I'm just a doer. I do my own service, repair, welding, and anything else.

Thanks for the info, I think I may make a trip to TSC:)

I would highly recomend replaceing the rubber with urathane you should get a couple of seasons out of the u-edge had the same ones on for 2 different cutting bars just had to adjust them down a little bit when i put the second edge on they clean alot better than the rubber due to being stiffer and i would have to say the slower wear on them probably helped the cutting bar last a little longer than it normally would have. I got my edges from jerre.

I have the mats from TSC in my horse stallls and i dont think it would work too well in this application although the rubber that is provided with the wings sucks to IMO if you were searching for a replacement you would be better off finding some sort of thick conveor belt due to the fact that the conveor belt will have cords in it to reinforce it which will make it stiffer and last longer going through the abuse of plowing.
An even better idea than Runner's is to get urethane & you will only have to cut & drill the pieces once instead of constantly changing rubber pieces. The urethane will last longer than the wings. You will have to drill the urethane a second or 3rd time down the road as they wear, but at least you are not cutting & drilling replacement pieces all the time, just adjusting. I never got a piece of the rubber to last long enough to adjust, they always fell apart before that point.

Get your local Rd. crew to give you the conveyer belt off the asphault grinder when its wore out. I use it for pick up beds, back drops at the target range, and so many more things. I think I just found another use for it. payup Thanks for the idea Joe

Well, I still haven't made it up to TSC yet, but I DID go out to my barn and check on some old stall mata that I had back there. They don't have the rigidity as the plow wing material, but they may not be the quality of the newer ones, either. Again, there are different grades of this material, and some in vulcanized, some isn't. Some has poly in it, and some doesn't. If I used a mat like what is out there in MY barn, I would have to reinforce it with a steel backing that hung down lower. I will certainly check, though.

As Mac said, conveyor belt scraps work well. For those in Southern Ontario, I get mine from QBM (Quality Belt Manufacturing) in Hamilton. They've got a plant in Fort Erie as well. Cheap and very long lasting. Use it for snow foils as well.

For anybody looking for urethane try a Good machine and fabrication shop. They also get urethane in bulk and have scraps laying around. I'm lucky in that department cause I get the toolmakers at work hook me up cut to size ready to go.. Hope this idea saves you guys some $$$$.payup :scramble
