My friend is a mobile mechanic and told me about this truck a few weeks ago as it was owned by one of his customers. We looked at it a 2 or 3 weeks ago and after seeing how good shape the truck was in, i could not let it pass. There is no rot or rust, the paint is bubbled up on three small spots on the doors the size of quarters.

The truck is a 1967 Mack R611T. It has a 673T (Turbo) with a Quad Box transmission. It is a heavy spec tractor with a 29k lb rear end. The truck was owned before by a company out of Southport (now gone) called Frank B Dawid. Dawid had many older trucks still in use when they sold off their trucks/equipment around 1999 or so. This tractor used to pull a 1968 tandem axle dump trailer.

Today, we went to get the truck running and make the sale. We pulled the truck is lo split in 2nd gear and the truck fired right up. We drove it around a little, made the deal and then drove it to my other friends shop. I'm still up in the air wether to make it a dump or leave it a tractor, but for now i'm going to put some new batteries in it, clean out the cab (damb mice and wasps) and clean the motor/cab.

In a few months it might be seen at a truck show near you....

We have a 68 U model that my father rebuilt into a short single axle dump, well before I was born. About 15 years ago we rebuilt it again and she still looks and runs great. Ours has a 237 Mack and RoadRanger. Easy as a Honda civic to drive!

Thanks guys!

My father still runs this truck daily. Its really a God send, because 90% of the time a one ton is just too small. This truck is light, small and can still carry 6 ton legally.

To make it related to this site, 3 (thats its number designation) has plowed for years while we had the airport contract. It pushed an 11' hwy plow and plowed the runways and ramps. A quick story about me, this truck and an emergency:

In 94 I was a senior in highschool and my father became really sick with an inner ear infection. We got a call at our house because the Medivac plane had to airlift someone to Boston that night and the runway needed to be cleared for take off (yes the airport was so cheap that they would only call us when absolutely neccesary). I raced to our shop and headed out with 3. When I arrived the airport manager gave me a radio and told me what to do. The plan was to make one full pass down the run way with the plane right behind me and I was to drive straight off of the runway as far as the truck would go. The plane would be right behind me and lift off right over head. The plan played out flawlessly, and the plane took off only feet above the truck as I went flying down the embankment. Never have I been anymore scared and proud at the same time.

I would have clobbered the idiot that told me to do that. Did u get hurt at all? What did you do when you got up from the embankment?

Dave.

Snoboy - I had lifted the plow and just cruised right off the runway. No damage, not even an abrupt stop. However I was stuck in a snow drift and had to get the loader to pull the truck out.

Jay - The plane overhead wasn't such a big scare, but on the long full pass I could see it taxi down the runway behind me. It turned and I still had a 1/4 of the way to go or so. All I could think of is "Please don't run out of fuel!!!". I was also worried that the path that I was cutting was perfectly straight, because on the right side it was pushing up a nice little windrow. Those puddle jumper Medivac Planes have landing gear that folds on heavy impact, and a windrow is enough force to either slow the plane down too much for take off (ie smash into my tailgate!) or fold up the landing gear. Oh, and since there isn't any de-icing chemicals used on the runways, the pilot literally had one shot to get it right. All these things ran through my mind as I was driving, so I kinda freaked myself out.

Thanks for the story Old Jim! Its nice to hear the stories of past and how people got by with old technology and ingenuity.

BTW -sorry about totally hijacking this thread.

Now that my thread was hijacked, i'm going to get back to the topic i orignally posted about, which is my truck.

Today i changed the fuel filters in the truck. Tomorrow i'm going to drain both tanks to get the old fuel and sediment out, and refill them both with some fresh diesel. After that i plan on using my friends steam cleaner and cleaning the rear end, frame and engine.

Hopefully next weekend my friend can wire brush the frame and paint it and then start on prepping the cab.

Well Bryan I apologize for thoroughly hijacking the thread. Didn't mean too.

Hope the truck is coming along nice. Please keep posting pics and let me know if you need help with anything. Also if you need parts, let me know. We have a parts truck (tandem tractor about the same vintage) with more interior and exterior trim intact.

Crash, I see no reason for the apology, I personally dont think you did anything wrong. Sometimes a topic drifts off a little because we all have basically the same interests and have something we wanna add to the thread to keep it going. This is a very friendly forum, with everyone sharing their information and stories, and because of this, a topic can drift off a little, but in a good way in my opinion. I see no reason for the thread starter to get mad...:waving Mike :wink

No, crash did nothing wrong. Bryan just suffers from a case of hoof in mouth disease now and then. It's been going for quite some time now, hopefully he'll grow out of it.......someday:beatsme

Being new hereand not trying to step on toes, but a member on many other forums, I can only think that maybe Brian wanted to run a thread that documented the progress on his truck. I have seen other threads on this site and others with this theme including those started by moderators. It would then be understandable to me why he might have gotten a bit upset. If this was true I would encourage him to start a new thread titled "Mack Restoration" or something similiar.

Moderators: Not trying to step on your job, we all have a case of hoof in mouth disease somethimes. Better to correct then insult I always say.

Many of the threads on this Board tend to drift slightly from the title subject, yet offer information that would be of interest to those attracted to the thread. Bryan has been with us long enough to know this and often interjects with his own input about his equipment on threads started by other members.

If we were to limit the threads specifically to their title content, not only would the Moderators be extremely busy in making adjustments to the Board, but also the Members would have an undue number of threads to sift through.

We appreciate your input just the same.

HAHAHA thats funny.......

You are dealing with 2 different animals...... The best I can describe it would be to say that as in baseball there is the MINOR LEAGUE (A, AA, AAA) and then the MAJOR LEAGUE............

Well the site you came from was like playing A ball........You moved right up from the bottom straight to the top and are now in the Majors here at Lets Talk Snow.........

I don't see how anyone could even think of comparing this site to that crap hole........

I for one am very interested in old iron. I would very much like a link to the site to follow your progress. I have been wanted to find an old truck and restore to a worker but have yet to find the right truck and motivation. I look forward to seeing your progress.
