When they say they don't make them like they used too - they aren't kidding. I couldn't help but notice the crossover pipe for the exhaust manifolds right up front - definetly out of the ordinary. That is I guess what makes this oldies so cool - the quirky odd things that used to be the norm, and now are the defining features. Have fun!

Fred,

Looks good now lets see some shots of the truck as a whole (front to back :D )

Looks like the truck is in pretty sweet shape...

I am still awaiting a phone call on whether or not we get the 1968 W300 Power Wagon from a local Vol. FD............

If we do score it we will be doing a bit of a restore on it as you are on your Ford...

The pictures are in no real order i cut the step out with the rocker panel and took a portapower and got the cab were it is stright again i am rebuilding all the sheet metal peices from hand with the metal brakes and dollys and avails that belonged to my dad the last pic is a piece i made friday before going to the big car show up in ST ingnace it is part of the door hinge piller were the door bolts on.

It is a slow process and iam sure with my shop being busy iam gonna be on the sheetmetal for a few weeks but this project has taken on a whole new meaning to me has my dads first plow truck was a 59 same truck basicly so ill keep everyone updated

Fred,
That's one heck of a project you got there. I know that a lot of guys would have bailed out before taking on such a job.
It's kind of nice that there is a sentimental side with memories of your father. Keep up the good work.

Hi Fred,

Again, excellent work. I must ask for some advise. Recenly I fired up my GMC, cleaned it out and did some brake work to it. I didn't realize how bad the body was until I noticed a bump in the driver side floor. Ripped the old mat up to find a pile of rust where the floor and cab mount should be. Its so bad that the ribs of the cab and entire floor are completely gone. To cut it out would yeild a much bigger hole than what the pre-fabbed parts can repalce.

What size sheet steel did you use for the floor? What about the cab mounts and reinforecement pieces? You said that you used stock pieces, where did you get them?

Crash

I have been to there site i didnt see online cat they send you the cat acording to your vech type, Sherman is another source , which can be bought threw your local parts store.

Has far has making your own sheet metal probley the greatest tool i own is my plasma torch i bought 24x8 sheets 16 gage sheet metal and work with that . What i do is make templates from poster board or body paper used to mask off cars trace out what i need and cut and fit. has far has floor boards are concerned once you have your metal cut to size theres a varity of tools you can use to shape the metal. Biggest tip i can give anyone doing body repairs is to make sure you buy a good quality seam sealer that can be used with bare metal and seal your work. A premade floor board would be the way to go for you like Chuck said for me there is very few premade sheetmetal parts aval so making any given piece can take me anywere from two hours to two days the door sill plates took me close to three days.

My box arrived from texas yesterday rust free but needs some dings and dents repaired overall i am happy with it and hopefully the truck body wise will be done by the end of aug, i still have interior to do and hydro pumps to install but iam detremined to get this thing on the road for the upcoming plow season.

Drifting off topic....

http://www.lmctruck.com/

But back on topic, having already done rockers on my 77 once, and now they need it again, I plan to do it differently. The problem is, when you weld the inner rockers on, there is no way to protect the inside of them. The welding burns off the paint / primer/ galvanizing (if galvanized) so how can anyone expect the parts to last? They rust from the inside out. I plan to modify the inner rockers this time around, and use rivets or screws to put on access panels. That way I can paint the insides, and help prevent future rust. Anotehr route is to leave off most of the inner rockers, and only weld on sections where support is necessary. That way the back side can be painted. Back in 92 when I did my 77, I thought it would last for another 15 years. I was luckey to get 5 out of the rockers. The bed, fenders and doors held up great. The cab floor supports were not available back then, but a piece of 1.5" X 1/8" C channel fit right inside the originals, so I beefed it up with that.

Some day I will get my 77 here, and start on finishing it off. Btween it and my 80 GMC, I'll have no room in the 3 garages.....

Well iam getting real close to getting this in the booth i have moved the truck again to my rental which is near the old shop i have a big project going on in it right know. The house is vacant so i moved some equipment in and set up enough to do the cutting in of jambs and shooting color so i can color sand before i paint it in the booth. It brought back found memeroys of the people next door he is 82 and knew my Dad real well he has been watching me like a hawk he says my Dad would be proud of me but honestly i think he more concerned about overspray and fall out lol.

Pickering Snow
08-19-2005, 02:20 AM
More pics in case anymore hasnt guessed red is my favorite color iam painting this E-4 vermillon Red except i am using a modifed dupont Hot Hues Croma Base the paint is 575.00 gal but the luster and pigment is better than i have ever seen in a Dupont paint i normally spray PPG but wanted to try Hot Hues.

Pickering Snow
08-19-2005, 02:26 AM
Rear of cab i have another day or so cutting in and color sanding and then i have to get busy on the box my project completion date for the body work is end of the month. I still have boxes of interior parts and other parts i have ordered to get installed. I found a original bench seat i need to recover that was gonna so it myself but time is running out and i am gonna send it out to get redone.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Todd has far has finding time it has been like said above one loooooooooong summer after i close up shop at night i come home the old shop is just down the street and i work usally til 11 or midnight there has been times when i felt like quiting its been hard to deal with all the metal work after working in my shop all day however i think most of the time working in the old shop i have these great memeroys of working with the man that made me what iam today and i get motivated from that. I have my laptop down there so i can even check on you guys at night lol. Both my daughters come down at night and help lol bug me my 4yr old likes to help really she will take a sanding block and sand for about 5 mins then bug me for 15.

This 60 project is a tribute to my Dad theres a big car show that i help sponsor at the end of sept i want to have it ready for that.

Along with the 60 project getting the wrecker converted to 4x4 i have done very little this summer i think i have had the boat in the water about three times the mustangs have set for the most part i take them out once in a while to relive tension :burnout

Cat No way would i want to do this full time it takes hours and hours to get this far even if i billed them all it wouldnt be fun for me. I spend way to much time doing stuff i know i have at least 8hrs in just paint work. When i watch american hot rod i can know get a understanding what these guys go threw i couldnt image doing it for a living , maybe 6 months to a year from know i may look back on it and say it was fun but right know all i can say is burned out.

I'm sure Alan is eyeing that trailer hitch and wondering why you didn't brace it to a crossmember or two before you painted the frame. It's not too late. Needs some type of brace from the center toward the front of the truck....

Great job Fred! The paint looks great now, I can't imagine how much better it can look after you buff it out. Good idea on the Aux. fuse box, I'm sure you'll need it for all the bells and whistles. Gotta pick up one of those old aooooogahhhh horns for it, LOL.

I'm thinking I need a new box for the 80 GMC, the tree hit it pretty hard, and damaged it more than I thought. I know I am looking at about 80 hours to get it straight, but time I have, and extra $$ I do not.....

Can't wait to see it all done Fred, maybe you can take it to Erie next year to get wide...... On the flat bed of course.... I wouldn't want you to have to endure a long highway trip, and I don't think the Ford would like it much either.

I hadn't actually noticed it until you mentioned it. But it should be fine like it is. After all, it IS on a Ford, so it won't (can't) get much strain anyhow.

Great looking job, Fred. I can only wish that I had the talent to make mine look so good. I have to settle for the 30-30 concept, if it looks good from 30 feet away or going by at 30 miles an hour, I'm happy.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and feedback has it stands i need to find time to paint the box this weekend in order to have it in next weeks car show , this week being a short week has been hectic iam running out of gas on this truly need some inspriation.

With Bidding coming up and me needing to get to Jerre's twice in the next month iam not sure if she will see a plow this winter poss salt dutys just not sure. I have watched a whole summer fade away looking at this truck and to be honest iam just plain burned out on it the whole resto should have taken a year or two to do and i managed to screw up just about every night this summer thumping away on it in the old shop so not sure what her role will be this winter.

Stik it has a 292 v-8 would love to do this cummins swap next year once again ill have to see.

Pickering Snow

Well what started nearly 4 months ago is finished i need to decide on a plow and some other things , and still working on the tailgatebut really am not concerned about it right know.

Pic 2--- 4 months ago after bringing it home from the upper penn from a distance it looked ok up close it was horrible has seen in many of my repair pics.

Pic 1 side shot finshed i added the tool box and side caps to match my other trucks.

Pic3 shot from rear needs tailgate and honestly most 59 and 60 fords didnt run a bumper has seen even in Jays link to the diecast trucks.

Pickering Snow
09-11-2005, 06:59 AM
Pic 1 Well fellows heres were it gets a little difficult for me i have had this plate made since june often times i wanted to quit the hours i put in are countless. If most dont know by know my Dad was very special to me he taught me this very trade from hand making sheet metal peices to leading to painting, and making them run right the plate is on the dash and often times i would look at it to get inspiration to finish my Dad never quit and taught me the same many nights at midnight i would have to take a gut check and i know in my heart i will never be the man he was but to sum it all up i dedicated this truck to O.W. Pickering Sr . If there truly is holes in the floors of heaven like the song says i truly hope i made him proud.

Pic2 Looking at modern day muscle and old school muscle sat down this weekend and figured cost to restore.

1960 Ford F-250 restored total cost no labor 12,597.50

04 Ford F-350 total with plow and gear 44,000.00

Big diff here is cost has far has capabilty i honestly think the 60 will plow circles around that 44k truck. With all the problems i have had with new trucks and having the abilty to restore you can bet on seeing more upcoming project trucks.

Final mods to 60 that i would like to get done this year or next

1 install blizzard plow i may poss wait til our April GTG at Jerre's has Chuck suggested , would be fun til then i will run one of my older western uni's on the 60.
2 i am almost 99% sure i won the bid on the wrecked dodge ctd and next year will convert the 60 to a cummins and a allison auto.

Fred, incredible job you did, both in the quality of work, and the time frame you finished it in. All along you've made refference to your dad,the finishing touch brought a lump in my throat. Im sure your Dad is looking down, and is as proud as a Dad could be.Great job Fred.

Fred,

Your '60 Ford is beautiful. That's an absolutely incredable job which you have performed!
Your Father would have been very proud of what you have done with that truck. I'm sure that he was with you during every hour of the restoration process. You have a great talent!

I cant decide which truck looks nicer. You have a pic where the 60 is in front of the new ford. And they both look good. Im jealous. Wish I had that kind of talent. Looks Great!!! Now if you put the cummins and allison and a blizzard all in that package you would most definetaly have the Perfect Plow Truck pimp

Thanks again everyone for the kind words sorry about getting mushy on the Dad thing just some days most i really wish he was here.

The Midland downtown carshow is saturday and i have some mag signs for the side of the 60 has once again the whole intent was to make a retro oldy a working truck again.

I used the 60 yesterday to go on a straight forward service call only needed a few tools. The customer kinda looked at me funny when i pulled up with it the guy looked at me and said do you know anything about the new cars :D

Beautiful job Fred. I'm sure you made your whole family proud.

You switch out the engine\tranny with a Cummins\Allison and you might be able to start up a new division for Pickering Services. Can I be the first to order another just like it? Just make it green.

I brought this back up in case anybody wanted to see the restore most metal parts i had to hand make has they were not aval. This truck also has lead i do not belive in bondo other than Rage for skim coating and places were it would have been ness i used lead

Iam the third owner of the truck it was a muni truck for Lake Leelanae up near Travere City then a fellow by the name of John owned it since. I have purchased all the repair manuels , owners manuels even the sales brochere for the truck.

The truck is turn key again maybe pass the word around your area if you know someone looking for a truck like this.

Thanks Fred

Fred, with all the quality work you put into the restoration, I think you should list it in Hemmings Motor News. You might have a better chance of getting what it is really worth from someone who can appreciate its real value.

Wow Fred what a grea looking truck. I have been out of the loop on this site lately, I use to be able to check in at work but i recently got promoted and I am to busy throughout the day to check. I remember seing a blue 1960 with a plow on it plowing my road as a kid, love that truck.
