Hey guys,

Here is a link to my page on Hank Sudermans Truck Site. I'm a big snowplow "buff" and have tons and tons of photos. I used to live in Upstate NY where the plows are the toughest in the world, and moved out to Northern California where the plows are pretty wimpy! Great snowblowers up here though!! Enjoy!!

Welcome to LetsTalkSnow.com!!!:drinkup

I used to build model kits too, and focused on trucks towards the end. I built a version of the AMT Louisville 8000 copying our local township. I made it a 6 wheeler too, and got spoked wheels from a Diamond Reo kit to replace the Alcoa style wheels.

I made a set of tire chains from a couple cheap necklaces, but never got around to building the plow and sander rigs, the responsibilities of married life took over, lol! One thing I did too was to make the butterfly style hood found on most of the Ford's used for plow service. This enabled mechanics to do PM work without removing the hood or head gear.

I think what impresses me most is how you've got the salt film on your 8000. I noted the swing area of the wipers on the windshield, now that's attention to detail!! Nice job!!

I've got a bunch of unbuilt kits in the attic awaiting me when I retire, I really enjoyed model building when I was younger.

Jay,

You've got a great collection of First Gear trucks!! I've only the got R model Mack from the Chicago DPW. I wanted to get the NYS DOT one, but it's way over priced. Rare, but too pricey. The Brockway kicks! I love those old Brocs. In my hometown in Upstate NY, they ran one and I loved that truck.

Pelican,

Thanks for the compliments. I tend to detail the life out of my models. And weathering is a ton of fun too. How many plow trucks are actually clean!! However the one I'm working on now will be clean and detailed, I don't think I've ever done so much detail. I will post pics of it in the next week or so. I hope to finish it up tonight while my girlfriend it out of town! Don't let married life stop you from building models. I told my girlfriend "soon to be wife" that the models come with me, and so does the time I need to build them. It's therapy for me!

PS.

Also, if any of you guys in here have pictures of your local towns, villages, states, whatever, plows, please email them to me at rpedone@accessbee.com

I am hoping one day to start a website of just snowplow photos. I've got well over 1,000 now, but could always use more!

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan,
What do you make the frames from because I have been looking to build the AMT Ford 8000 but I dont want to throw $50.00. I think I would have a blast doing that kind of stuff. I would also like to find a 99 Ford Ranger 4x4(of course) Model so I can make my personal truck, I think that would be awesome. As would the other guys on this sitre except the guys with about 17 trucks lol.

Jason,

I completely scratchbuild all the plow frames. Every hobby shop carries a ton of Plastruc and Evergreen plastic shapes. It's all basically the same shapes as found in the actual steel used to make the real plows. I also take a ton of up close photos of snowplows and I've even been to Viking-Cives main facility up in Harrisville, NY and got a first hand look on how the real plows are made. I take that and scale it all down and there you have it. The Amt Ford is a great kit for a plow because you see how many plows are Ford LN8000 and LN9000. Only problem with the kit is the frame of the truck does not extend out beyond the grill and you have to extend it with other frame pieces. Really simple, but requires some lining up. If you ever need help, just email me. I'd be glad to help. Thanks for posting the links to the Plastic Cowboy site. I'm hoping to wrap up the IH S-series in the next 2 weeks. This one is by far my best and most accurrate.

Hey Ryan,

Since I now have some more free time than I have had in ages I have decided to get back into building plastic models a little bit more. Your projects have motivated me to do a little scratchbuilding of my own this summer.

I got lucky since the local Hobby Town USA is going out of business. I was able to replenish my old supply of paints and accesories pretty cheaply since the whole store was 35% off. I also bought a ton of Plastruct shapes/sheets to begin my new project.

Heres the details

The kit: Ford Louisville Delivery Truck
(this is the box truck kit with the hydro rear lift.)

The Plan: Custom plow mount/wing tower up front with extended frame. Custom built plow/wing blade, Custom built spreader body attached to frame, Custom chrome slash cut stacks, custom interior plow/spreader controls. I was also thinking about filling/shaving the stock headlight locations and just doing custom roof mounted plow lights like you see on some of those serious snow fighting rigs. I also intend on fabbing up tons of strobes for various places on the rig. And if I get that far I intend on rigging up some brine holding tanks for the sides of the spreader.

The Paint: flat black frame, Ford Engine Red Leaf springs, Ford Engine Blue Block/heads, Safety Orange Cab with white pinstripping, Stainless steel spreader with Orange pinstripping.

I began the project tonight by doing some rough eyeballing and some misc. painting of engine parts as well as frame parts. It sure is nice to now have such tools as a Dremel that I never had when I was a kid building these models. It has already come in handy :D...

Ill start snapping some pics as I progress along.

Jay,

Great to hear about you getting into some modelling!! If I can offer any help to you, I'd love to. As you've seen in my photos, I've built the Ford Louisville and it's a great kit to work with. Only problem is that the front frame has no extensions and in order to mount the plow correctly, you need to extend the frame. Also I've been resin casting right side wings. They are coming out pretty awesome. They just need a little sanding and a little putty. Email me off site at rpedone@accessbee.com and we can chat more on this and I can offer any help you need there.

Ryan

Can't wait to see the pics!

Well I have been cruising along over the past 3 days with this project.

I got the frame assembled, the engine is all assembled as of today except for the headers and a few other minor details, the hood and cab have 2 coats of Competition Orange paint on them, I began the little detail work also (painting the tiny bolt heads on the frame, shackles, engine fan, etc) and the best part is as of tonight I began doing some scratch building of a plow frame/wing tower as well as the spreader chain assembly. I even did a set of plow lights up tonight that are very very tiny.

I will post a few pics of what I did yesterday and a few of what I did today...

First pic is the motor as of yesterday (much further along today)
Second pic is of the hollow metal piping to be used for the stacks
Third pic is just a shot of some of the painted parts sitting on their trees

A few more pics!!!

First is of the leaf springs painted Ford Engine Red along with the gray bolt head details
Second is of the cab after a coat of paint
Third is of the hood after a coat of paint

First pic is of the truck just roughly laid out (cab and hood laid out on some cardboard on the frame for mockup of the plow frame note the passenger side light bar for the plow frame is a bit longer to pickup the tower I beam once I mount that up.)
Second is a pic at another angle of the mockup
Third is a pic of the frame that I scratchbuilt (its far from done, still needs side plates, front cover plate, as well as lower frame for the plow mounting pins, as well as lift arm and cylinder and the rest of the wing tower and lights.

As Ryan had stated the front frame is very short past the hood on this particular kit so I left some extra I beam to fabricate direct to the models frame once everything is finished.

The first two pictures are of the I beams/chain base plate for the sander body. (sorry the first pic is very blurry)

The last pic is a bit blury but is of 2 tiny plow lights which I fabbed up out of plastruct. I drilled small pilot holes in the base of each and stuck a toothpic in them each so i could paint them easier with spray paint. I also used a dremel tool in order to chamfer the backs of the lights so they tapper just like a set of factory Western/Fisher lights...

More to come tomorrow...

Jay, I don't know if you're in to accuracy, but those chromed valve covers should be blue with the block. Early Fords had the Cat painted blue, later ones were Cat yellow. Also the Allison tranny should be metal grey, most of the ones I've seen are unpainted.

When I was building, I'd detail them as close to real as possible, including paint. I had a couple I used telephone wire to run air and fuel lines. I'll have to see if I can find any of them and take a couple pics, I've got them packed away somewhere.

Ill have to definitely get that tranny painted up tonight and ill see about getting the valve covers painted but im not sure how well the paint will adhear to the plated parts since I already adhered them and cant rough them up with some fine sand paper.

Thanks Steve!!!

If you find those the pics would be appreciated

Here's a tip on removing chrome from plastic parts:

Soak the chrome pieces overnight in a clorox/water solution. The Clorox eats the chrome but won't harm the plastic. Paint will stick no problem after that. I'd try a test piece and see if the Clorox will harm your paint, I don't think it will.

Castrol Super Clean takes off all chrome. You can get it at Walmart. It's all I use and it works great. Doesn't harm your eyes and lungs as much as Clorox.
