I acquired four 8.25x20 drive tires for my 5500. All mounted and ready to put on,, with one small snag. They are Goodyear HiMilers, not a bad all purpose tread but when they get down about half tread they expose a solid center rib, which is useless off road. I never thought I'd see a time when 8.25s were hard to get, but they are now so I wasn't about to throw these away. Especially not after hauling them home from the Greater Chicago area.
So,, I ebayed a grooving iron and recut the tread. It's a regroovable carcass anyhow, so I wasn't worried about getting too deep. Took about an hour a tire, spread over a bunch of days and I've got tires with a decent tread about half as deep as new.
Hint,, if you are determined to recut a tire, leave it in the hot sun. The extra few deg. makes the cutting go a lot faster.
