Hi all! Seeing as how winter is starting to wind down ( knock on wood ) I'm trying to decide how to keep my brand new Curtis from rusting. It already has a little rust on the pivot points etc. but that can be easily touched up. My question is becuase I don't have a garage, it will be kept outside all year round. Would you recommend a tarp to cover it (I know Curtis makes a cover but I would rather not spend any more money!!)? The only problem with a tarp is wouldn't it just hold the moisture in?? I'm just trying to keep my $3200 investment in tip top shape!! Thanks in advance for any opinions/advice!!

Spray it down good with “Fluid Film” if its new to you do a search on it and read up. Its what I like. I’m not big on air tight tarps like you said like building a humid hothouse. IMO

Cleaning and preparing it is just as important as protecting it with something to prevent rust.

Powerwash and clean it,to get all the salt off it.Touch up\paint any areas where paint has worn off,or chipped.Grease all pivot areas, and moving parts,as well as any exposed portions of the angle rams.A fluid flush is a good idea as well,to get any trapped moisture out,and prevent any internal damage to the hydraulics.

You can then spray the whole thing down with Fluid Film,or some other form of rust protection.

Keeping it out of the sun will help prevent UV damage to the paint, and rubber hoses too.

I've read quite a few posts here referring to Fluid Film, so I thought that I would give it a try. Picked up several cans at a John Deere dealer last week. I expect to wash things down and give it a shot this week.

I don’t know if this is common knowledge or not but when I drive around I see a lot of plows just sitting on the ground.

I like to get mine up on some bricks or wood blocks. I don’t know with U edge you might need a long board or something for the edge to rest on.

Will sun light affect U edge?

I have a plow parka for my new X-Blade.

Either put the whole plow assembly on a pallet or put some blocks under the shoes to keep the U edge off the ground. It is also a good idea to protect it from the sun.

Like Chris said...
I power wash mine down, and take it for a ride on the truck when the roads are dry of course, to give it a blow dry :grinz Then change the fluid. Grease ect. Wipe it down with break-away or wd. Put it on the dollys and push her back in the far wall of the poll barn for a long summer nap. :grinz
Still looks new after 4yrs. Never has seen much sun, just snow. It's allways kept inside when not in use.

I sand any of the nicks down and apply POR 15 cleaner, then primer and finally the POR-15 Topcoat. once dried I use the Curtis orange. The cutting edge just gets a coat of POR15.
