View Full Version : Nor'Easter - Feb28-Mar1

Well, they used that word- Nor'Easter, on the local weather forecasts here on the 6 p.m. news. The two fellows from Buffalo- channel 2 and channel 4 both said things are shaping up for a large storm to start on Monday. Two Low pressure systems are to converge, with the centre of the Low to track right through Southern Ontario, from Detroit up through Toronto. No set determination on potential accumulation, etc. Temps so far are projected above freezing (34/35), so not alot makes sense yet.
These are also the fellas who said we would be getting 1-3" by midnight tonight (was supposed to start this afternoon). Haven't seen a thing yet and it's after 9 p.m.
Wait and see, I guess!

We could get rain here, maybe some back end snow . Up North , it looks like this one is for you ::D
Accuweather is showing 4" for Monday/Monday night and another 4" for Tuesday.
Might actually be at least one good push in there. This year I'm not getting overly enthused just to get disappointed. If this one does happen, anyone taking odds on it being the last for the year?

Waited all night hoping for some snow! Got up this morning at 6 am and found just a dusting on the ground. Let's just hope this NorEaster is going to bring us some work! God only knows I can use the money.

Everything I've heard for Southern Maine says snow/rain along coast with heavy snow inland, or heavy snow everywhere. Their not even hinting at anything less. This will be # 14, I think. We've still got another month of good plowing. March of '93? was one of my busiest months.

Last night I went to bed at 11:30 and it was snowing. Woke up at 6:30 and headed out to salt/scrape the +/- 3cm that we got overnight. Sun came out and everything was bone dry and clear by the afternoon.
Don't know about any long-term forcasts, but there's a huge storm system in Texas that looks like it'll swing up our way in a couple days. Definately wouldn't be surprised if we get hammered. Usually we get it the worst when it comes up through the Ohio valley and the temps are around the freezing mark...

Like Maine, here they don't know if it will rain or snow, but it looks like March will come in like a lion.

Environment Canada issued a Special Weather Statement early this morning. Still to far out to predict with any accuracy, but they're expecting 20cm+ (8"+) and lots of blowing and drifting.
The radar, and my gut, tells me we could get more than that. We'll see...In the meantime I'm gonna get as much rest as I can since we've got plenty of early warning on this one.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON NY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT... AS STRONG LOW PRESSURE MOVES UP THE COAST ON MONDAY...SNOW WILL SPREAD NORTHWARD IN ADVANCE OF IT...LIKELY ARRIVING LATE MONDAY MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON. SOME MIXING WITH RAIN OR SLEET WILL BE POSSIBLE BY LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...WHICH COULD HOLD DOWN SNOW ACCUMULATIONS SOMEWHAT. EVEN SO...CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT A 6 INCH OR GREATER SNOWFALL COULD OCCUR BY THE TIME THE SNOW TAPERS OFF MONDAY NIGHT. IN ADDITION...WINDS COULD BECOME QUITE STRONG DURING THE PERIOD OF HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION...ALLOWING FOR REDUCED VISIBILITIES. AT THIS TIME THE EXACT TRACK OF THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. ANY SHIFT EAST OR WEST OF THE CURRENT FORECAST TRACK COULD HAVE A DRASTIC EFFECT ON FINAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS...AND HOW MUCH SLEET AND RAIN MIXES IN...IF ANY. A WINTER STORM WATCH IS ISSUED WHEN SEVERE WINTER WEATHER IS POSSIBLE...BUT NOT IMMINENT. AT THE TIME...THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW AND OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS. FUTURE DRIVING AND WALKING CONDITIONS MAY BECOME HAZARDOUS...SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.

Attached is a link to one of the weather discussion boards that contains a bunch of continually updated weather maps.
You can see this storm coming together now over the Southeast, and can then watch it as it heads wherever it chooses to go. If the big swirling white area makes it to your area, check outside to see if things are white. If so, go plowing.
I like the water vapor map. It clearly shows a couple of storms now heading for the west coast.

The forecast for Pittsburgh has been every bit as indefinite as everywhere else, if not moreso.
I've given up on trying to get a handle on when and how much we'll end up with. I've decided just to paraphrase the dierctions you find on shampoo bottles. (You know--Lather, Rinse, Repeat.)

Supposed to stay around 25 here all through the storm. That should keep it pretty dry. With the time frame, should be able to plow with the storm without issue.

This morning the official word is 4-6" starting after noon today, throught the evening. Tuesday will bring another 4-6", and winds will increase. Wednesday brings flurries and blowing snow. So three days before it clears out.
I just wish we could get some times nailed down. I prefer to keep all the plowing throught the overnight hours, and rest during the day, but persistent snow may prevent that.

They "say" the big snow is yet to come, but as always we just have to wait and see  The forecast changes by the minute, lol. It's coming down pretty good here on the island tho. I think up north you are "supposed" to be getting more snow, where here it's going to mix with rain. I think you'll get some good work out of this ;)

Its 700 here, and finally its started snowing. At this point im not watching the weather ,since its happening now,its better to look out the window and see what we've got, since the "forcasting" just isnt working, they were way late on the start time of it,im not buying the amounts forcasted either.
Pete, dont buy them moving up the amounts, because an hour from now they'll move them back down, they do it to keep you tuned to them, for ther ratings and advetisement.

Not snowing yet here. Trucks are ready, even put the tire cables on the Topkick and the pick-up. I just got a set for the Topkick and thought I'd try 'em out.
Weather prognosticators are talking anywhere from 12-18" for this area depending on who you listen to.
To top it off, I'm on my own for this one, my brother who normally runs the pick-up is in Utah skiing. I need to explain to him that there is plenty of good skiing in late April out there.

Been snowing pretty good for quite a while here. Be heading out at midnight to start looping around the route. Not supposed to stop snowing until tomorrow evening. One of those deals where nobody will have a clean lot for the morning. Those that were just plowed will have less accumulation than those that were plowed hours ago. Means we'll probably field the usual bonehead calls of "Where are you?", by those who've already been plowed...

#1 - Plow with the storm. It's much easier to push 6 inches twice, than 12 inches once.
#2 - Commercials need to be open for 7 am.They would get awful upset if they hadn't been plowed once before 7 am.
#3 - you can't plow squat during the day,as your stuck in traffic, and have to wait forever to back out onto roadways.
I could go on and on...........:D

snow is easier to push the less there is. 6"is easier and quicker to push twice than 12" at once. Also some buisnesses are open 24/7 like gas stations, kinkos. I plow a college and some city parking lots so if it snows at night my stuff has to be done by 6:00am if possible. The lots also have to remain clear all day so if it keeps snowing you keep plowing. It's always better to be ahead than behind. As far as residentials go we usually wait until the storms done unless the homeowner calls. thats just my thoughts:rolleyes:

We keep the private roads up during the day and some parts of commericals...but other then that we just let it pile up, cant afford to have guys on over time out driving around until the storm is over, guess were luckey we have the Cat loaders and power angle plows, they'll push anything, I can see why pick-up's need to plow with the storm though.....all depends on the plowing operation IMO.....

well i can see where u guys are coming from if we got 12 inches but look outside theres 6 or 7 across CT. You still can wake up at 3 in the morning and get things done not 12 there wasnt even 2 inches at 12........you get the commericails done first then the ressis, it dont matter how much stuff u got to to you canstill get it done......unless your one of these wanabees with a ford pick up and a tailgate spreader not a real sander.......(and sweet strobes and hideaways)

I don't know how many accounts you have, but there is no way that I could have woke up at 3am and got all my accounts done by the time they needed to be out. I left my house at 9pm monday night, and didn't return home until 1pm tuesday afternoon. that was straight plowing the whole time, other than driving to residentials (which was the last 7 hours of my route).
BTW, I have a ford pickup, and a small spreader on the back of my truck. It works for me, and for the amount of salting that I need to do. There are a lot of guys on here with setups similar to mine. I don't think we are all WANNABES. I would think a little more before you decide to make statements like that.

we ended up here with about 5-6" total. i left at midnight, but it was a couple hours early. It stopped sooner than expected and wasn't all that bad. i was prepared to battle the whole day but ended up at home around w2pm.
once again the local news stations seem to sensationalize the chance of snow. they bring your expectations up and then it's a flop. on the other hand it puts the customer into a panic which is nice since i signed up three new customers.

We started Mon. night at midnight. Got a full push in, average 5 inches. Put a little salt down on the comm., but it snowed off and on all day. Everyone was back by 2 pm. Started again at 9pm, and another full plow due to about a fresh 2-3 inches, and some drifting. Most were back by 7 am, I just got back at 8:20, and the last truck is out spreading the last salt. It is still flurrying here, but the sun is trying to poke out. So we'll see, but I'll probably check it all again tonight.

Same here. Started Monday night at midnight, plowed until about 5:30 and spread some sand and salt until 8:00 am. Between the lighter than expected snowfall and the extra equipment that the boss brought in, we got done much quicker than expected. I have a feeling he kept me on an extra hour or so just to give me an even 8 hrs.

We also ended up with an additional 2" after the light snow during the day yesterday. One driver was out during the afternoon re-doing the residentials and hitting some little unoccupied industrial drives, while myself and another driver were resting. Then we took over from 7:30-3:30am and scraped/salted the commercial route again.
Had zero equipment problems which was great, and actually had a residential customer call just to leave a message about what a great job we've been doing all year since he signed on. Nice to get a compliment every now and again. Usually, you only know a customer is happy if they aren't calling and leaving messages. Most only pick up the phone if they want to complain...
