View Full Version : What can it be now? It's not the CPS...

Here we go again...One of my employees was driving the 550 this morning and called me to say the truck was acting up again. This time it's different though, it's like a dead pedal effect. The truck idles fine, but periodically when you push on the gas pedal, nothing happens - tach drops, then all of a sudden it will kick in.
I swapped out the CPS and it acted fine for about 1/2 hour after that, then it started again. From a stop, or while driving, apply gas pedal and it cuts out.
A friend is going to come by with a code reader, but in the mean time... any ideas...

Could it be the IVS switch? Will this code or do I just need to measure the resistance? It should be 0 ohms with foot off the pedal right?
After looking at TDS, I also saw about the TPS. Will that hard code too?

I would check or look for codes involving the ICM (injection control module) we had this problem happen to our 96 psd and that was the cause. Unfortunatley I was told that ford doesn't core these parts anymore so they are fairly expensive.

How old is the truck?
Could also be a sticky or dirty IPR(Injection Pressure Regulator).
Ford will tell you that can't be cleaned, but that's just because they don't know what they are doing!! LOL
Does it die, or just act like it has no power and won't come off idle?

It's the '01 Greg. What my guy is describing and without scanning the codes yet, it sounds like the TPS Throttle Positioning Sensor. He will be at a light, or even while driving and will get a dead pedal. Tach drops to idle for a second or two, then it comes back up.
I had the same problem with my truck. The pedal assembly was replaced. That's the only way to get the TPS.

John, I just had mine go bad too on my 97, i'm glad I got 100k miles out of it. that was a pricy pedal assembly, just over 500 bucks installed. If I had a scanner, I would have picked up the part and did it myself. I didn't know exactly what was wrong. because it would drive fine, but then the light would come on and then it would have that dead pedal effect.
glad you got it figured out.
