My 93' 7.3D was really hard to start. Just slow cracking when starting it. It's been that way since I bought it used, and thought thats the way it's going to be. When winter came about, I never know if it was going to catch or not. Always had a short burst of ether handy, even though I hate using it.

Well last week, I was doing a job, loaded the Bobcat to go home. I hit the key, and nothing. Had plenty of juice, headlights never dimmed, solenoid was clicking.

After close inspection under the truck, I notice the cable from the solenoid to the starter was loose. It turns out, the nut was melted, and loosed up. Can you say "Contact Resistance"? Could not tighten it, it would not turn. So I jammed a screw driver against the cable under the nut, and got a man-on-the-street to turn the key for me. Got me home.

Well, I replaced the solenoid. I also cleaned all the battery terminals "again", and even soldered on some new battery clamps on a couple of cable ends that someone had replace with the screwdown clamp type.

Well let me tell you, what a difference!! I hit the key now, and that starter cranks that baby over like I've never seen a diesel crank. It roars to life very quickly. Cold temperature doesn't even faze it. Course my cold temp is still above ZERO.

So if anyone of you inherited slow cranking diesel, check out all your cabling.

It's nice to have a dependable truck again !

We see a lot of cable problems with 90's Ford diesels.I usually just order all new right from Ford,as they are reasonably priced, and bolt right on.
