:( :( I hate to tell you, but the Olds diesel was a converted gasoline block diesel. It was GM's great idea to jump into the diesel market without paying their dues into developing a real diesel engine. They had many problems with these type engines within a short time time period. Busted cranks, cracked blocks, busted heads, so on and so forth. The gas engine cannot withstand the pressure and vibration that the diesel combustion produces. Needless to say, they quit producing these engines within a short time, because they were a massive failure.
I would say this is why no one will touch the thing. I hope you have not spent too much cash on the engine.
The engine running wild and blowing white smoke is oil getting into the combustion chamber. BAD JU JU Beans! I will bet that even after you turn the key off, the engine still runs wild, right? Diesel will burn about any type of liquid, providing there is enough pressure and heat on the compression stroke.
Hey, but on the bright side, hang onto the engine for a little while. You might get someone to buy it from you to put in the "Ripley's Believe it or not" museum!:cash:mad:

I should Look? to Correct this Problem!--as I Figure? theres only Two Answrrs?-- ONE the Biggie--a tiny Hole in a Piston? & TWO--the Fuel Return Line to the Fuel Tank may be Plugged?--as Its NOT Burning Oil from the Oil Pan! as its FULL!--I*M presently Building a Twin Screw Heavy Duty Wrecker which is Nearing Completion-& as Soon as Its DONE! I*LL Tackle the Olds & DAVE Thanks for Your REPLY! --Ole JIM--

Jim, glad to hear that it is not the oil. I had a couple of 1980 VW rabbit diesels back quite a few years ago and they would get into a run away condition when oil would seep into the combustion chamber. Even if you turned the key off, they would continue to run away until all the oil had burned out. My Cummins diesel doesn't do that, but, then again, it is a much bigger engine and would probably require a lot more oil to do this. Good luck with finding the problem on this. This is all the advice i can offer.

Hey Ole Jim!
There's a guy on gmdiesel.com that runs a 5.7L Olds in a 1/2 ton truck. He's a regular there (can't remember his handle) and knows a great deal about the 5.7L and 6.2L diesels. Give that site a shot and see if they can help. Good Luck!

Years ago I broke down in Statesville NC and got towed into a shop named Irelands service I always remembered it because it was St Pats Day. This guy was making a living going to Fla and buying them with low miles and blown motors and taking them up to NC and putting gas engines in them and reselling them. I almost bought one off him in fact. He told me at the time that was the only fix he thought. He did have old engines piled up all over the place.

They are here and will reply to the post give it a day or so and if they don’t ask me in a message and I’ll point them out for you. my understanding of those converted gassers of the 80s was they were pretty much junk from GM as posted above. The guy I was telling you about was getting them off of old people in Fla who were thinking when they bought them they would last forever and at 20 to 30K were blowing them .
As for the rust problem do a search on my name and or rust / rust proofing or fluid film and read up on that you like me life in a salt mine half the year. and we have been talking a good deal about that problem as well on here.

Bud BUD I am Not an Internet person--I have explained my Diesel problem to so many I often forget?--& I Goofed mentioning its an Olds--& I hear they were a Gas Engine conversion--& JUNK? I know I did for many yrs--but thought?? their might be a Diesel Hot Rodder out there? that had had that Problem?-& would save me the Time of Re-Checking every Thing!--to personally locate the Problem?--& most people are Not all that Smart? as I read guys w/4X4s w/ Big Tires & lift kits--plowing Snow!--& Crew Cabs!--none of Which are my Personal Idea of a Unit to Plow With!--as most of the young are Caught UP in the Material Worldly Things!--I call them the HEY Look what I got CLUB--No Pun Intened!--its just that I*M Not into Keeping UP w/ the Joneses!--in my 50 odd yrs of Working & Tinkering on Equipment if I listed All the all the Equipment I have Personally it would be several Pages Long!--Construction--Plowing & Landscaping--equip!--Dono?--Ole Jim--

I agree Bud, and moved it here.
Jim, we have a wide variety of members here with varying ideas. We've found the best way for things to run smoothly is to have a "live and let live" attitude, if what others do doesn't suit you, then so what? We throw our ideas out for all to read, but don't criticize others who may have a different opinion.

Hey Old Jim
Once again if I said something out of line I’m sorry for that. And in no way did I mean anything personal out of it. When you ask for some ones advice on an issue you have to respect the fact that they are giving you their honest advice. Not what you may want to hear and not that you have to except its just advice. I told you earlier on in the string I was no expert on diesels and that there were experts here that would help and if they didn’t find the post I would let them know about it for you. when you started the second string I thought we should combine them into this one. I didn’t tell you per say I felt your engine was junk just that a guy with 75 of them stacked up behind his shop told me they were. Seeing was believing in that case for me.
I wish you well with your project and hope to hear how you make out with the motor come spring.
