Yep its official. Snow squalls and bands have made for a very hazardous drive here. It is so cold that the 1/4" we have here in Meriden is an icy glaze. Highways are a mess, Hills are HORRIBLE. Bill (ProSno) just called and said that in Wallingford (the next town over) they have 1.5" and he got to drop the blade at a few accounts. No where is sanded.
What did you guys get around here?????

Heres a couple of pics of me testing out my Stihl with the powerbroom attachment this morning.
It worked great. This was the perfect little shot of snow to test it out on.

I just got in from work. I work in Boston and live about 15mi. south. Nothing around here but coming out of town was a mess and it is even worse north. Saw a couple of spinouts and passed 3 sanders stuck in traffic going north, while southbound was a sheet of ice.

Got about 1/4 inch. Had to fire up the salt truck and hit the roads and parking lots for the first time this year. State must have got caught. Accidents everywere and traffic backed up real bad.
Hey Jay, Don't fool with us now. We see that garden hose laying on the patio to make ice.:jk

People are driving like total idiots. The highways are all shut down or at a stand still right around me here. There was just a report of a Jacknife tractor trailer right on 91 near the Meriden exit.

I just got back from the first run of the year. The lake effect machine has started again. They are calling for another 3-6 by midnight, but at last check of the radar, it looks to be slowing down for the time being.

If im not mistaken 1" of Rain is the water equivalent to 20" of dry fluffy snow so 1/4" of rain would be 5" of fluffy dry snow.

We got about 1/2 an inch in less than a 1/2 hour at work. There was 5 accidents in about a 1/2 hour following that. I did a double shift yesterday, and when I left at midnight last night, there was black ice. When I got in this morning, there were still patches of black ice.
They salted after the accidents. Looks like they were not prepared.... a 60 million dollar maint. contract.... and cars and trrucks sliding and crashing all over the place. Unacceptable, IMO. So much for the money saving national property maint. company. Last year they botched the snow too. The first storm shut down the whole base for a day, and it was only 6".
Then they sent a mass e mail out saing that parts of RT 80 were closed, and Rt46 in Budd Lake, and 287.
Accidents all over the place. I guess I was the only one that saw the weather this morning, and knew the snow was due?
Unbelievable. Then when it was time to go home, another mass e mail, telling us 3 main roads were closed in the town I grew up in, because a squall dumped 2 - 3" on them. Funny all 3 were county roads, and the County was always slow to respond.... Guess that hasn't changed.

... THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT WINTER WEATHER EVENT OF THE SEASON IS POSSIBLE THURSDAY NIGHT AND INTO THE WEEKEND OVER EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA... NEW JERSEY... NORTHEASTERN MARYLAND... AND DELAWARE...
A SLOW-MOVING COASTAL STORM... OR WHAT MAY BE A COUPLE OF STORMS... IS TAKING SHAPE FOR LATE THIS WEEK AND INTO THE WEEKEND FOR THE NORTHERN MID-ATLANTIC AREA. THE FIRST SURGE OF MOISTURE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTH THURSDAY NIGHT. TEMPERATURES WILL BE COLD ENOUGH FOR RAIN TO MIX WITH SNOW OVER EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND CENTRAL AND NORTHWESTERN NEW JERSEY... WITH PRECIPITATION POSSIBLY WEIGHTED MORE TOWARD SNOW OR OCCURRING AS MOSTLY SNOW NORTH AND WEST OF PHILADELPHIA.
AS THE NEXT LOW MOVES NORTHEAST AND POSSIBLY STALLS NEAR THE AREA OR OFF THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY... AND UPPER LEVEL ENERGY MOVES OVERHEAD... MORE WINTRY PRECIPITATION IS POSSIBLE INTO THE WEEKEND. WINTRY WEATHER MAY EXTEND SOUTHWARD INTO PORTIONS OF NORTHEASTERN MARYLAND AND DELAWARE AS COLD AIR IS DRAWN SOUTH.
IN ADDITION... A STRONG ONSHORE FLOW IS LIKELY WITH THIS STORM. IF THIS MATERIALIZES... THERE IS A THREAT OF COASTAL FLOODING DUE TO THE STRONG NORTHEAST OR EASTERLY FLOW AND THE APPROACHING FULL MOON.
A SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATION OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE OVER PARTS OF THE REGION LATE THIS WEEK AND INTO THE WEEKEND... SO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IS PROVIDING ADVANCE NOTICE OF THIS POSSIBILITY. HOWEVER... SINCE CONFIDENCE IS LOW IN THE COMPUTER MODELS AND IN EXACTLY HOW THIS SITUATION WILL PLAY OUT AT THIS TIME... AREA RESIDENTS AND TRAVELERS TO THE REGION ARE URGED TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO LATER FORECASTS AND POSSIBLE WATCHES WARNINGS OR ADVISORIES AS THE EVENT GETS CLOSER....

Well guys Satruday we got hammered by Lake effect in my area- got 7-8" at my house, was out all day ploing! I listened to my pager and there were accidents all over the county thanks to the lake effect. Yesterday we started the am kinda slow, but by 3 in the afternoon things were rolling pretty good. Lots of wind and drifting though. I hit my commercial accounts, went home grabbed a bite to eat and my "storm" Bag ( lots of goodies and coffee!! LOL!) and hit the road. Had a few minor mechanical probs, but about 1 am had some serious problems. Needless to say at 2am I was driving down the road with my maglight to go get a spare alternator and running y truck off of y jump start pack. I got the alternator, nosed it into the Fire station( our spare bay- no HEAT!!!!! and switched the alternator out. Got back to work and finished up aroung 6am. Went home for a couple hours sleep. Went out around noon to go through the truck and make sure there was going to be no further problems( fluid check etc...) found that my power streering fluid was low- turns out a fitting had come loose on the back, so off to the garage I went to tear that apart!!! I finished moutning my spreader today, quick homemade setup, and will finish the wiring tmo- need to get a two speed switch. So if we do get slammed again this weekend I'll be ready to roll!!!
Bill
Snowplowjay - Not that your wrong on the amount of snow from an inch of rain but the average is 10" of snow for each inch of rain. But as you said if it is the fluffy stuff it could be more. I wish I had one of those jobs figuring out that stuff.
I want snow!!

As I write this the truck is warming up- I've only been home about 8 hours now and I need to go out and plow again. I got up at 3:30 and checked- only got about an inch of snow, it's now 6:20 and I have 4" on my truck!!!! As I write this I am reminded of the joke that Jay posted earlier about the couple who moves up into the snow belt and the guy slowly looses his mind due to that "friggin white stuff that keeps falling from the sky" LOL!! I feel sorry for anyone new to the area that is just getting snow for the first time!! I am enjoying it- but I would like a day to catch up on my sleep if we are going to get a storm this weekend!!!!!
Good luck gus, and if I could I would definitely spread the wealth!!!!
