What type or kind of oil do you use in a Western Plow....the reason I ask is because I took the motor off (because it was seized) and where the motor was, I saw black oil...it looked like regular motor oil.....I just baught this plow so I dont know what is actually in it. Would that explain why I can lift the plow arm up easy and push it back down easy?

You can use regular automatic transmission fluid in it, but you would be better off with original equipment Western fluid. Im not sure what affect having the wrong fluid in there would cause. You might want to check to make sure the big packing nut on top where the piston comes out is tight, dont go overboard tightening it though. Tight is tight, stripped is broken. ;) Hope I helped some. Mike is right, use atf (mercon/dextron 2 or higher) if you have to but you will have better results using western oil.

Since you have the motor off take the pump Inlet screen out and clean it as well as the inside of the pump. Brake cleaner works well. You can use Synthetic ATF in your pump with the same results as plow oil. I use it in both of my pumps and several other members do the same. At about half the cost of "Name Brand Oil"
