I personally have two businesses- one construction and my wife owns a landscape company. I am shifting my construction more towards custom installations and woodworking, and we are concentrating on growing the landscape side. I was just wondering how many people do snow only, or have other work that they do.

In the summer I do Landscaping. In the winter, besides plowing, I also work for the town highway dept. as a dispatcher/operator. It works out good, it's a guartanteed 40 hrs a week, because as we all know, some winters, it just doesnt want to snow.
As of 4:30 this afternoon - snow only.

My dad owns a gas station/auto repair shop. Its been in the family since 1951. I work there with my older brother and my father. Me and my brother fix the cars, as well as help my father pump the fuel if were not busy in the garage. Thats my full time job. Snowplowing is just on the side, even though I love plowing as much as any one of you guys. :D Mike :)

My main business is an Auto repair shop.We also do trucks and equipment.I also have a small computer shop as well.
Snow keeps up busy in the winter, when the other stuff is slow.Perfect fit too,as I can repair and fabricate my own stuff, which keeps expenses to a minumum.

I use to be in the landscape maintance industry and have kept some drives left over from that time. Have spent the last 6 years as a light duty equipment tech specializing in snow removal equipment (certified Western and Fischer tech). I do my drives before work and then go and either put together a new truck or repair the ones you clowns broke.

I am still in the corporate Info tech world, currently as an IT auditor. 45 min commute into Denver keeps my hi-tech city job and my low tech mountain lifestyle. We have been plowing for 28 years to allow my wife to be an at-home mom, and to give our kids an entreprenuerial view of life.
And, I just love trucks...:D :p

I am a General Contractor full time specializing in Kitchens, baths, & basements. Also do a sh!tload of custom doors & windows.
Along with dabling in realestate, rentals & flips.
Things pretty much slow down around here for a day or two when it snows. If i'm in the city it could be 3 or 4 days before things are back to normal.
I started plowing again 4 seasons ago to pick up the slack and have been having a ball. I do mostly estates out on the main line offering full service, drives, walks, & de-ice. I also have a handful of 3 push drives. Will be switching over to comercial starting with a few smalll hits this year. Next year hope to be geared more towards commercial.
I have been bitten by the plow bug and there is no cure in sight. :help

My dad owned his own computer contracting business, but after 9/11, the job market just crashed. He is still kind of keeping it going, but we are concentrating on lawn maintenence in summer, plowing in winter. My brother helps out, also working odd jobs on the side, and I do too, outside of school and hockey. However, I am constantly looking for a get-rich-quick scheem, thought I had a couple, but I am still looking...:geekboy

Pretty much sums it up for me too.
I tend to slow down in the winter(not all my lawn customers are plowing ones)
I only have one employee(my brother) who works doing snow removal/plowing for the most part. But if needed i can call in 2-3 others to help out in the really large storms.
Gives me time to do other things i enjoy such as ice fishing, snomobiling, snowshoeing, etc..

Full time landscape Installation and maintenance company. Employ 2 people seasonally. Do both upscale residential and commercial. Going this winter for irrigation design certification. Being there is not much snow in middle Tennessee, when it does snow, there is only a handfull of plowing contractors. I get buried with phone calls up to 5 days after the snowfall, provided it sticks around!!

I think that I'm the only one to say this.....I sell cars. I own my own car lot (very small), and my snowplowing business. If things go well this year with plowing, we are going to get into the lawn maintenance side of things. Car sales have been very slow lately and I'm sick of the headaches that come along with getting them ready to sell. After this year I think that we are through with selling. Maybe a couple hear and there. Now Snowplowing.... that's what I really LOVE!!

Off your web site: Notice the debris collection system. We won't leave chopped up leaves, grass clippings, and trash on your property like some other large property maintenance companies do.
DO NOT DIS OTHERS THAT DON"T BAG!!!!!!
I leave all grass clippings..........

Mike, that's called marketing; and if it works? Might mean you need to invest in collection equipment!payup :nodd

Then it needs to read a different way, verbage is one thing the grren industry lacks. Putting down the compatision is not a good way to make headway.
"Notice the debris collection system, it provide a clean, neat aprearance that does not leave laying grass clipping, chopped up leaves, or any trash on the turf. We provide a service many do not offer."
Adding " like some other large property maintenance companies do." disses all the other LCO's whom do not bag and do not leave grass clippings laying or trash or even leaves just laying on the properties.
Mine says the same thing without putting LCO's that don't bag down.
Not putting you down bro' lets lift the standard.

Catching fish, lobsters, shrimp, and scallops for a living year round is what keeps me busy ,when the weather suits.I also do diesel engine repairs,Detroit Diesel in particular, welding and fabrication for marine ,truck and trailers, and my specialty, hydraulics, mosty marine ,but have installed a few central hydraulics systems in trucks, trucks are pretty basic compared to a 120 foot herring seiner with 8 pumps and 32 control valves and if thats not enough to keep me busy i now have snowplowing to add to the list, just call me a jack of all trades, master of a few, lol.:D :D

Fleet Manager at a college which basically means I am responsable for keeping everything with an engine running whether fixing it inhouse or coordinating repair work with vendors. Scheduling of Vans and Buses also is mananged out of my office. My job also includes Managing Snow and Ice in the winter and Managing Small excavating projects in the summer when the students are gone and the transportation scheduling part of my job slows down a bit. I also work as a call FireFighter for the town I work in and then spend a couple hours a week working on an Estate.

well in the winter I plow and sell plows and accessories-parts
in the summer I haul scrap metal, I own a container service with 6- 3 yard and 4-1 yard metal dumpsters placed at local brake-muffler-transmission shops. I am building a trailer right now that will hold 3-3yard boxes (9 ton capacity) but I will need a bigger truck to pull it, might get a new f-250. the work isint bad 2-3 runs a day every other week, I average 3 tons a load and at $113.85 a ton for steel right now that makes plenty of money, I am going to sell it off this year and go back to landscaping, I love cutting grass.

Was an equipment operator/truck driver for a local construction firm doing a little of everything, got offered a job for the local water district as a construction inspector, work all year now with all the bennies, snow was a way of survival for a long time, now it is just a little extra $$$$ , have had to cut back and farm out a lot of my route, not many people want to get up at o'dark thirty and go plow, they burn out real quik, so I still keep pretty busy, my youngest son is ready to take on some work as soon as we get his truck set up.
