Finally got it all together. I had bought the used starter & fabbed a mount for it in the spring. Ordered the plugs & a solenoid from Jerre in the summer. And got it wired up truck side this week and it works great (well, haven't tested real bulk salt yet, but she shakes nice!). All told I think I spent about $35.00 - $40.00 including spare parts & wire lying around. And I didn't keep track of how much time, but might have been 3\4 to a whole day of effort if all done at once. I wasn't in a rush & it was my first one so I took my time to make sure it was right. If I do another one it will go much quicker without the R&D time.

Took it back apart last night. Will attack all the rust & grind my welds later today. Then hope to get some paint on it tomorrow & put it back together & ready for work by Sunday for possible salting Monday.

Here it is all pretty after the painting. Got to use it this morning & it worked great. I started with a load of 1\2 nice dry bulk & 1\2 bagged material. No problems. So then I got brave & shoveled in a whole load of thicker, wetter bulk that has been sitting in one of the lots since last season & was able to get that all through as well. Overall a successful & fun project. Just gonna add an adjustable deflector & a bracket to hang a shovel on the side & then it will be perfect for me.

How did you make it vibrate?

I know it spins, but got to do something to the bendix.

Weld a piece of weight offset on the armature nose, that will make it vibrate. :D

Just be sure you have a good weld, and be sure to fab some type of guard around the shaft. If the weight came loose, it would launch.......

Sucks that my pics were blurry. In the 3rd one you can kind of see a silvery "mass" against the black of the spreader. That is 2 - 5\16" sized bolts welded on. I had started with the one, but didn't seem to shake enough, so I added the second one & could tell that would be just nice.

How long will that thing last spinning out of balance, you would think somethings gotta give/wear at some point?Just curious, looks good though.

Have no idea? :beatsme

Friend of mine used a larger starter to make one for his 5yd or so dump body with under tailgate hydro spreader. That thing had at least 2 seasons on it as of early last season. Next time I see him I'll ask if it has been replaced yet. Snowjoker built one last year & it's still alive as of last week. My thoughts were after I replace my burnt up welder & get through the Holidays, I'll go buy another used starter & get it set up as a back up just in case. I'll just have to take the time to match one pretty close so that it can bolt right on the existing location. If it fails during an event, then I'll have to go back to all bagged material to get through, which is OK as that's what I use for ballast in that truck anyway. I'm just happy to be able to shovel some bulk through while at the bigger lots instead of hustling bags, then I'll just use the bags when I'm at the small lots further away from the bulk pile or the other truck. My arms were very happy with me the other AM :grinz
