I just recently noticed that when I'm accelerating hard, I can see what I feel is a lot of grey smoke. In addition when I let off the pedal I get a "puff" of smoke. The color of the smoke is not bue or white., or black as far as I can tell

I have an 02 7.3 PSD with 70K miles. I haven't check fuel milage in a while, but I don't think mileage as suffered.

Is this normal or are there problems I need to address befor the 100K warranty is up?

Usually excessive smoke = incomplete combustion...

could possibly be caused by leaking or bad injectors..............
or a leaky intake manifold gasket..........
or injection pump issues........

Good luck just a few possible problems to check on...

black smoke= lack of oxygen. Grey/white smoke is usually a timing issue. If the mileage is good, its not using any oil,and its running fine, i wouldnt worry much, just get it checked out to be sure.

Geez,I clicked on this thread thinking you were going to be proud of your excessive smoke, now you want to fix it ? ;)

Try running a bottle of good diesel treatment\injector cleaner through it,it just may help clean it up some.

My neighbors ask if my ruck runs"rich": once in a while:D I hardly ever blow smoke anyway, these new injectors are incredible,so much power, hardly any smoke.

If you are having the extreme cold out there that we are, you're truck is smoking more due to the temperature. I don't know what the make up of the smoke is, but I see it every time the temps drop to single digits or less.

I am taking my 2002 CTD in for help after work tonight. It is smoking white really badly when starting cold and idles like a roller cammed rat motor. It is totally gutless untill fully warmed up. If I push it at all it stammers and stutters like it had bad plug wires. (yeah, I know, no such things on CTD) Pops in the exhaust and everything. I suspect timing or injector pump dying. Any other ideas???

Scott, I am certainly no expert, but could it be as simple as it being cold or colder than normal? I read about this on TDS about the 7.3s where a few people were experiencing this. The experts there pretty much said that it was most likely cold(er) weather related. Like you said, once it warms up it runs fine, which is what the others on TDS mentioned as well. Anyway, good luck.

My 95 PSD needed to warm up for 15 minutes to run really well once it got old. If we plugged it in it would be a bit better. Probably could have done some tuneup work but the truck was beat and we just got rid of it.

Cold could be part of it, but my '97 CTD starts fine and barely smokes. Then stutters for the first take off, then is fine. The 2002 barely starts even when plugged in. smokes worse than most Kenworths, and won't pull itself out of its own tracks for 6-8 miles. Even then it will still miss a little if it was left idling. It just never quits smoking. The dealer agreed it was likely underwarranty so I should have some info in a few hours. I will report back in. Thanks guys.

Scott, your VP44 is likely on its way out. :( This is a known 24V thing, and why ive always preached about monitoring fuel pressure on the 98.5-02 Cummins diesels. If its under warranty they will take care of it.The 02 HO should start easily down to below zero without being plugged in.

Well, the dealer ordered an injector pump. He said there may be a bad injector in there too, but until thepump is replaced, they can't tell for sure. Fortunately it looks to be on warranty. (49k miles on the truck) Pump should be in tomorrow. Truck should be ready tomorrow evening. Hope that settles it, specially with 30% chance of snow over the weekend. Let me see it I got this though... Black smoke good :burnout White smoke bad :nope
