:D Thought I would start a thread on how deer season went this year for all our hunting buddies. Myself I took a very nice 6 point at 4:00 pm opening day weighted in at 162# dressed. Great thing is my 9 ry old was with me in the blind. The deer went 20 yards after the shot, so he even got a taste of tracking in. So how did you do!!

We are heading out in the Morning (fri) to get ours........LOL

Well ok we are going out to TRY to get ours in the morning.

My son has been sitting with either me or my dad this year as well, he can not wait to be old enough to hunt.

Opening morning they (my dad and my son) saw a nice 8pt but my dad had no shot (it was looking at them, they could not move) Then last night we had one pass by us but on the wrong side so I had no shot this time.

We will be out every morning this weekend, there are plenty of deer in the woods we hunt, as it is the only patch of woods surrounded by ALOt of open corn fields.

Deer ??? could someone send me a pic of what one looks like??

Seriously though,,, The season started on the 17th... I saw a huge bodied buck with a rack the size of your hand @ 8 am opening day. I figured I would let him go and wait for mister big (a 10pt thats be running around here).
Since that day I have only seen 5 deer and nothing closer than 150-200 yds away :headwall

Our weather has been pretty bad for hunting too it's either 65 degrees or perfect 20-35 degrees with 50mph winds:mad:

It's pouring right now and were supposed to get some snow tonite so tomorrow morning should be a good hunt.

The last time I had this bad of luck I shot a 8pt wall hanger with 3 days left in the season.

Good luck guys:D

This isn't for me personally, but my brothers and fiancee got:

Brother #1 nothing....hee hee
Brother #2 6 point
Fiancee 8 point, weighed in field dressed over 200 lbs., I can't remember the exact number. This is just nasty, but they had to cut its back legs off at the check station to make it fit on the scale without touching the ground! It was a beautiful deer, so of course I get to look at its head on our wall forever now after it gets back from the taxidermist! (They always stare at me.)

Supposedly one of the local good old boys got a 17 pointer, but we haven't seen any evidence, only "heard" about it!!

Good luck!

theres pics of mine in the topic Trip to Maine And its a buck even though it doesnt look like it. Got in to a fight with the Game warrden on that one. We had to go to the rule book. LOL because of the antlers. He said both had to be more then 3inchs long. I said no only one. because they break there antlers in fights. We went back and forth but he let me tag it :D :burnout

So far I have gotten a little buck with my 2000lb bullet, a small doe with my bow towards the end of the season, and I just filled my does tag for my back yard last weekend on a beautiful big doe- she weighed close to 150lbs field dressed. I took her to a friend of mine for butchering and when she was hung up with the other deer in his cooler she was almost the same size as the bucks from my area! She will definitely feed my boys for a while! I went out yesterday in the Soutern tier and I saw nothing but hunters:mad: I really don't like Southern tier hunting, I prefer going up north with my rifle and being all by my lonesome, or with a friend or two. I still have four more tags to fill- one more doe tag, my regular tag, and two for late season muzzleloading, so hopefully I will get some more, and it would be great to get Mr. Big too!! I will post some pics if I have any luck there.

This overly conservative and dorky state of Pa doesn't start till Monday... well into the rut. Pa. Game Comm. in their ever divine wisdom loves to place a couple of weeks of no deer hunting during the rut. Guess they figure the deer have a change to "get to know each other". That way the does that slip past gun season are likely to have fawns come Spring. BTW, we have to count points on antlers and it varies by wildlife management units too. Has forced many hunters to become shy in shooting a buck. Game Commission wins, auto insur. companies and hunters lose. Supposedly this experiment will increase the quality of buck and the state's herd.

Man oh man cnyproperties,
you guys in NY have it NICE! My bro-in-law has a camp in the western southern tier and he's always getting deer and nice sized ones too. Many of the NW Pa. deer have migrated out of the national forest to NY and to the western counties of Pa. woodlots and sporadic gardening have helped to draw them there. Nothing in the forest but high canopy with most food 70' up. When loggers timber an area, it a war zone there during that season!!

I can harvest 4 deer this year; I'll be darn lucky to get 2-3. If I put the plow on and drive down the roads doing 40mph, I'll likely get all 4!!

Don't get me started.:headwall

This year i've seen tons of deer, watched a nice 8 pointer when i was out bow hunting.
It was on lawn bordering the woods i hunt, but it refused to come into bow range.Passed on a couple of does that i could've arrowed from less then 10 yards away hoping it would follow them into range.

My brother in law and his father both got 3 pointers, one with a bow and one with a pistol w/scope.

Rifle season so far has been crazy, Opening day and the day after it i missed getting out hunting because my wife(7 1/2 months preggers) was admitted to the hospital with stomach pains.Nothing serious thank goodness.

Hunting on my inlaws property I've seen a bunch of does but their land is a non- DMP area so i can't fill my tags there.

Plenty of time left thou, still have late bow and muzzle loader seasons after the end of rifle.

Thanks, Hopefully I will be able to post some pics tommorow night of this years buck. Last year our game commision started antler restrictions, like in the area I live in they have to have at least four points on one side to be able to shoot. I thought it was a dumb idea at first but i have to admit it worked allready. I have seen some bucks this fall that knocked my socks off. Hopefully i will get one of them. The toughest part is telling how many points they have, if you can tell how many points a buck has while it's running through the woods 75 yards away your eyes are alot better than mine.

Pelican
11-30-2003, 01:31 PM
I wish they'd make that rule around here! We get all the yahoos from the city up here, they take spikes on opening day! I won't shoot any buck under 6 points, most of my neighbor's have a gentlemen's agreement to do the same. One however, invites a crowd up from down south to hunt and there goes our conservation measures!

Roger Dodger
11-30-2003, 03:33 PM
Careful Pelican about those "city" hunters. Some of us folks can easily outhunt the farmers and forest folks that live amongst the deer. I have consistently smoked my hillbilly pappy-in-law's hunting efforts. Funny how the only deer hanging in his shed are always just mine. Several years back I hunted a farm lot for 3 years, harvesting a deer every year. The sons then, booted me off claiming there's not enough deer for everyone! I never saw them get one deer during those 3 years. It didn't help them either when their priorities were eating chili and playing with those small video poker games!

I know someone who's a DEC officer, he tells me of some of the things they've found from city slickers. The most outrageous was a guy who had a mule strapped down to his car.

I've thrown city dwellers off my property, had them argue with me as to whether or not I was the true owner. One guy was dressed head to toe in orange, looked like an orange Michelin Man. His shotgun had a magazine tube that stuck out past the end of his barrel. The woods aren't safe when these idiots are around!

Then when they ask "Seen any "deers"?", I just have to hide my face from laughing.

W-n-K Landscaping
11-30-2003, 04:24 PM
That is one reason why I try to stay away from souther tier hunting- ran into too many guys asking similar questions, and have heard way too many stories from frineds/DEC officers about what has happened. I prefer the solitary confinement of a half hour hike into the woods, set up my climber overlooking a nice clearing and settle in to wait. I have seen more wildlife, and thought more sitting like that, and never heard or had to deal with another hunter who knows nothing about the woods.

We have a couple of those kind of guys up here from NJ. They go hunting with semi auto shotguns and wound the deer and then refuse to track it if it doesn't just fall over when they shot it.:headwall

Not so fortunate here. First day saw around 35 doe 3 bucks, all the buck were 6 or 4 point I think ( not legal ) Worked Tuesday. Today went out for an hour and a half this morning saw 6 doe, came in house to shower to go to a meeting, get out of shower and hear dog barking, look out window and see a monster crossing field and crossing road coming to my side of the road. I'm "buck" naked and soaking wet grab t-shirt, jeans, & sandals and try heading him off in the big valley behind my house. Next thing I know I'm 200 yards from the house wet, freezing and no deer. Went back out this afternoon (properly dressed) and saw 12 more doe. Then just before dark I went to town to get fuel, On the way I see 8 doe and two buck in my buddys front yard feeding. He has a long driveway, I pull in just to get a better look and they slowly move towards the neighbors field (my wifes uncle's property) then BOOM BOOM. I pushed them right in front of my wifes aunts boss(does that make sense?) he is some city schmuck! I feel like an idiot. Another 10 minutes and it would have been to dark for him to see them. I pushed them right in front of them.

I see both sides of "the fence" --- plenty of goofballs from rural and city in the woods. As for me... I'm a rural child, turned adult suburbanite.
You don't even want to know what I witnessed opening day!!! Some poor guy and his "hunting guide" friend! They should've stayed home. I wonder if he had some of his toes amputated afterall?

YOU HAVE TO READ & BELIEVE THIS!!!
I got a doe Tues. morning in a snow squall. She bedded down 25yds. behind my tree!!! She snorted twice at a distant trailing hunter, then got up and walked, having the most surprised look in her eyes as she discovered yet another eager hunter... me! End of story, into the back of the truck girl! I've got 3 more tags to fill.

Late eve. Tues., 9 turkey make a 250yd. casual walk directly at me, just a feeding away. I remained motionless, in full blaze orange & they never darted. In fact they walked within 25 feet, yes 25 feet and crossed the road to their roosting grounds. 4 bearded & 5 hens. Unreal! Now, come Spring Gobbler, they'll spot me 50yds away in my full cammo. Go figure!

Nice buck there Foster... nice!
I was onto a nice sized one during archery until I sheepishly allowed another archer to muscle into my stand area. A thousand plus acres of public hunting land and he sets up just 50yds from me!!!!!!!!
He removed my wayfinding ribbons too. I have yet to see who it actually is but I felt like cutting the chain, and bending his stand. Instead, I phoned the game warden, gave detailed info. but to this day the stand remains and I think the moderate tree damage has never been looked at. Maybe the warden is waiting for end of season so he can really nail him for not removing it as well? More charges = more money for the Commission.

The woods usually isn't the place to discuss or settle differences between two armed people in pursuit of the same goal. Some guys get very defensive and agressive over hunting. Not to be a coward but, my goal is to leave the woods in the same condition and shape I was when I entered them! I just think people need to pick their battles carefully in this day and age of hotheads and rage. :argue

Finally!!!!!! finally!!! finally!........... With 4 days to go in the season,,today was a "it's brown it's down" day (leave the scope guns in the trucks,,grab the open siters and lets go). I was walking over to push the goldenrod field, when I walk around the corner and 2 doe are standing there (should of had the scope gun) about 75yds away...I took a shot and they just stood there. So I shoot again they move a few feet and start walking away,,I take one more shot and I can sort of still see them but they are not running. So with noway to cross the creek (4-6' deep) I decide that we'll continue as planned and push the field. We came up empty handed. Walk back to the truck,,drive to the other side of the creek,,we split up and walk both edges of the little woods (about 100sq yds super thick). We get to the end and nothing came out,,no tracks no nuttin. We're standing there talking and all of a sudden this deer comes running out of the woods and takes off running I shoot again and blow it's RR leg off..it jumps over the creek and hauls @SS into the really thick woods (60 arces). I walk into the woods where it came out and yepper theres a nice (bright red=gut shot) puddle of blood...Now it's 3:30 and we have to find this deer before dark. Not wanting to waste time I find a fallen tree to cross over the creek..I start walking across it and wouldn't you know I fall into the creek :headwall Now i'm Pi$$ed  So i'm tracking this deer and every 30-40 yds it's laying down and i'm getting a shot when it pops up. The other guys went back and took a spot at the edges of the woods in case it comes out while i'm following it. At 4:45 I have 2 slugs left and these guys are getting ready to shoot me...gotta keep looking it'll be dark in 20 min....now i'm on my hands and knees going through the pines and there it is bedded down looking at me. I lay down, pull up and take the final shot. I call the guys on the radio and say it's finally down for good.
It turns out after 8 shots I took a spike buck and the whole time we thought it was a doe,,nobody ever once saw the little horns. Good sized deer weighed in at 186 dressed. It was also the same deer I missed thursday afternoon @15yds on a full blown run(with the scope gun), but thats another story.
Oh yeah we had a 2 mile hike back to the truck dragging this guy...so tomorrow they are saying i'm pushing without a gun
:)
With the weather we have been having I'm just glad there is meat in the freezer now. It's getting late and I have to be up @ 5am.....still have 2 doe permits left:D

But congrats either way for getting your deer!! You didn't give up, which is more than can be said about some hunters- if it didn't drop in it's tracks- then they must have missed, so they won't chase it down- people like that really irritate me!!!!

I got a doe on opening day. I did not even see a deer in the woods last year. A buddy of mine is a taxidermist and he said it was slow this year on deer, but he took in 3 times the amount of bear he usually sees. DEC says last year put the hammer on the deer with 2 , 24" storms right at the end of season with alot of snow already on the ground.

My brother in law found a dead 4pt in the woods down the road from the house, he's a logger. He said next year he's carring a rifle on the skidder. Swears that chainsaws are a dinner bell for them.
