Hey Conn plowers what is the going rate if any on subs for our fair state.

Now let me give the full story on this. See I was asked by a friend to help plow a parking lot this year and he is going to pay me $35.00 an hour min 3 hour or $40.00 an hour with no min. Is this good or to low I am unsure which is why i ask for your advice.

This will be using my truck not one of his, He also said that he would pay alittle more ( unknow how much more) if I sanded to other wise he will have to come and sand it himself. Any comments are appriciated thanks

PS. if this is in the wrong forum my sincere apolagies I was unsure where to put it

if he is gonna be subbing for you, why would he pay you money? im a little confused. and if hes plowing with your truck, hes not subbing, hes techinically working for you then.

When I was doing sub work (99/03) I was getting $40 an hr + fuel. The Last I knew was that the City of Waterbury was paying $75 hr for 1tons with sanders.

I'm not sure what the market is like for subs in your area but to me that sounds a little low. Up here you can get $20 an hr to drive someone elses truck and anywhere from $60-$80 an hr if your using your own truck. Keep in mind these prices are in Canadian dollars, but don't sell yourself short.

Chip,

I believe that rate is low.... it should be more like $50 to $60 an hour for you and your truck, your equipment, fuel, etc..

I got that much several years ago in the trumbull, stratford area...

Are you still looking to SUB???

Do you have any accounts of your own down in the Shelton area or would you be willing to come up north a little ways???

good for you. Your better to park your truck than work for free. When the trans goes out or your plow goes down its going to cost a lot of $. IMO,$35 an hr is 20-30 too low per hr. for 8 ft plow 3/4ton truck. your v 10 alone must burn 5-7 bucks ah hr worth of fuel.a good drivers worth 20 easy.that leaves 7-8 bucks for the truck/plow/wear and tear/maintenance/insurance,just to mention a few things.

Chip,

Just out of curiousity ... did your friend actually get someone to work for the $35 and hour??

In 1998 I recieved $35 hr. These days I would assumed it would have to be atleast $45 Hr. +. With Diesel at $2.00 + a gal. That figure might be low.

I am new here but think about it. I dont do 25 dollar driveways anymore.I can most times get 5-7 driveways done in and hour with average @28-40 bucks a driveway. I think in this area you will do better on your own. I cant run my equipment for less than 80-125 bucks and hour. I see guys around here running tri axles for 60. I dont get it:D Whats average for driveway in this area....Not new at this 33 years now.

wow, i'm in NJ, and I thought you guys up there in CT would be getting a lot more than even 60 an hour. I have a friend who subs for TRUGREEN landcare (they are really big and are nationwide i believe) I wouldnt' sub for them, but he does. They pay him $85 an hour for his truck/plow and then if he salts, it's $25 or so per bag of salt spread.

My accounts I charge 90 an hour just for the plow/truck. 35/per 80lb bag spread.

From what I hear about housing and incomes in CT, you guys deserve more money. I wouldn't even get out of bed for 35 an hour for my truck/plow. I know how much fuel my diesel takes for a long night of plowing. Last year a few times I blew through both tanks of diesel in one long route. that's 60-70 bucks just in fuel. Then there is all the time we spend cleaning our trucks after the storms, gotta factor that into your rates even if you aren't directly billing someone for that time. bottom line, you should be making money from the moment you leave your driveway. I don't rip people off, I just charge what the going rate is in this area. Some lowballer beer hounds around here, but for the most part, people are willing to pay it and don't ask any questions about the price.

I feel bad for your friend..........

TruGreen Chemlawn is one of the biggest scam artist chemical companies out there as far as spraying "colored water" etc. and charging for it...............

Many articles across the net and trade magazines about their poor reputation..........

KEEP THOSE SUB PRICES HIGH
In ohio we usually get $55.00 for an old undependable truck and plow or $65.00 for one that is dependable. give or take a few dollars. Don't know about salt. Probably never will put in my truck. Good job on not low balling that keeps the money good for all of us.:)

yeah. i know all about truegreen. and he doesn't plow for them anymore. i think he did last year and a the year before. i never wanted anything to do with them. takes forever to get paid. and they are jerks to deal with.
i know someone else who was a manager for there irrigation dept at the location nearest me and also did snow removal in the winter. he said you wouldnt' believe the bills they were sending out of that place, makes everyone else look low. adding so much on top of what they were paying the subs. that's why they are so big.
I'm happy getting my own work, not having some company tell me where to go, and then not pay me for 3-9 months.
