View Full Version : No heat!
I've been getting this funny smell in the cab of my 5500 lately. Reminded me of what an old barn smells like. Not really unpleasant but certainly not somethng you want around you all the time.
I have also noticed that the heater motor sounded really faint, like it was barely turning over and not much air coming out of the ducts.
Today I really needed heat and had just about none. When I got this truck it had been in a pole barn and then outside on grass and I had found a huge mouse nest made of seat padding blocking the heater but I figured that since the truck no gets parked in a gravel lot and there is no padding anywhere in the cab (foam seat) that it was unlikely there was another mouse in residence.
WRONG!!
This is what the heater ducts looked like when I opened it up.
There was even more inside the heater shroud on the outlet side of the core. Worst part is that the little bahstud was in there and got away. When I got the shroud loose a nice fat deer mouse scurried up and out. Before I could get him by the tail he dropped down and disappeared along the frame rail. So I may still have him along for the ride.

Nothing like mice running over your feet when your plowing.....and the smell, nothing like hamster cage in the morning! Clean it out and place some traps - they love peanut butter. The only sign I know of a hard, cold, snowy winter is when mice try to get indoors or in your truck - this may be a GOOD sign. Last year they were in the wifes car, I had to clean it out at least twice. The last time she heard a "clunk" he was still there when I cleaned it out.... :wink
After I got the ducts cleaned out I couldn't move the air flapper to get air to flow through the core. Something was blocking it. Had a hell of a time getting everything out as there is no room for hands in there. Finally, after mucho compressed air I got it clean.
I had a bag of winter rye in the cab, apparently the little guy wanted to keep his groceries close to the heat too. The wad in the left tray was from the ductwork, the half bushel of seed rye came out from behind the air door, along with a little more padding.

Not much that stinks more than mouse pee, especially heated! Needless to say, I went in the truck that night!

I was wondering what happened to all "my" pet mice!
You took them back to Vermont with you!
And now that they have moved into a new home and got their winter supply of food ready, you go and kick them out!
All because the weather turned cold and "you" weren't getting enough heat!
 John...............
