I'd like to keep my summer employee as busy as possible and would therefor like a second truck. He's extremely reliable, honest, and hardworking. Plus it would make me a little more money too :D . That way I would be able to go to California for my vacation.
My employee told me he just moves to the south side of his house for the winter, great attitude.:D

i'm a one man show right now hoping to expand to all season services with another truck next year. i voted for a 20 truck operation......that would be a milestone!

As far as owning the vehicles then I like what we are now, 4 trucks and one machine. I would like however to be a little larger in the sub area, maybe 8-10 subs as opposed to the 3-6 we use now.

I'm with you Joe- I'd like to expand my business in this area, and be able to tackle some larger sites/companies. I agree with the larger scale operation and the headaches it brings, but I'm looking into possibly expanding my operation to include a partner or two with several subs, and backups of course. I live in the perfect area, and if we approach this right we stand to make alot of money. It's just going to take some time to set this up right, and follow through.

Bill

BTW- Joe, once construction season ends, and snow season begins we need to sit down for lunch and talk. Maybe Clean Cut Lawns could come up?

LOL!

Ditto what JDPlower said. I would, however like to get all my trucks into the '90s. 4 trucks and 4-8 subs, that's my target. ;)

I'd like to go for the large scale 20 + trucks... this way i could afford to spend the summer sitting on the beach in flordia waiting for snow lol :D

I would like to get into the med. catagory but adding a machine like a Volvo L90 or equilvelent size.If you have 5-8 trucks then your doing parking lots and places that need snow moved or stacked.

When i start my excavating business in a few years, i'll most likely be plowing roads with the larger trucks, and doing commercial accounts with smaller trucks and loaders/backhoes.

5-6 trucks or pieces of machinery sounds like a good size.

Have two trucks now me and my son. Dont know it I want any more. Have been subbing for 20years for some real good friends. We started with one truck, then two, added some subs. Added another truck (total 3) pluss subs. Added more trucks and drivers, sidewalk crews. Now there are a total of eight trucks and a bobcat. Five pickups with straight blades, one 1ton with straight blade, one 1ton with v plow, one 2 ton with straigh blade. Some days I like just plowing and not having to do all the paper work, pr, etc. I treat all the cilents just like they were mine. Just dont know if I want to get any bigger. This is just to much fun (Plowing)
Plus I can still go do my full time job.

As far as equipment, I like where I am - 2 trucks w/plows and sander. I can handle about anything around here, but I'm not big enough to have the headaches of employees, heavy equipment, payments etc. A few more accounts and some snow would be nice.:fuming

Well we have over 20 pieces and the insurance is through the roof  no more like :fuming I think by the time we get through GL, Workers Comp, Auto, and Inland marine it will be over $100,000. this year. Up by 60 % These insurance companies are crazy. They don't care about contracts, training, experience, safety or anything. All they want is MONEY..

Maybe selling Fudgy Wudgy's on the beach is not such a bad job after all. LOL

I actually downsized from three trucks + 1 sub, to 1 truck (me) + 1 sub + 1 backup plow truck & driver. If I had a good guy to operate the 2nd truck full-time then I'd be happy with the 2+ a sub level. It's landscape installation that I want to expand.

I would like to be in the 5 to 6 truck range. That would be a mix of my trucks and subs.

I have two trucks set up for plowing and salting, plus one plow only sub. I started turning work away third week of October. I can see adding more subs by like most people are saying the GL, Worker Comp, Auto, and Inland marine rates can only go up. Would rather pay the sub alittle more and not incurre the increase in insurance.

I voted for medium sized outfit, which is what I have. 5-7 plows, ground crews and 3 spreaders. Perfect size in my opinion, the right balance of headaches, maintenance and profitability.

I like where I am at this time 2 trucks. I like being in contact with my customers on a personal basis. Plus working full time I don't have the extra time that I would take to work a larger operation.
