When i bought my truck a few months ago the guy said that the solenoid usally had to be replaced every other year and he recomended to get a back up. Well it hasnt crapped out yet and i know that if and when it does it will be snowing and outside in the cold.

So that brings me to my next question. Its a newer style and ive found a site that sells them. But.... how do i know if "cabel controlled" or "Electrically Controlled" . Heres a link to what im lookin at.

The two seem to look the same on all websites ive looked at.

http://www.rustrepair.com/app2/onlinecat.htm?r=ds&p=sn-western-ws.sol

Its number 2 or number 3.

Thanks a ton guys

Cable controlled has 2 cables that run out to the pump. It will have the old style T-handle controller or a larger floor or dash mounted "joy stick". Will likely have a conventional mount, the pump will stay on the truck while the blade is removed.
Electrically controlled has a small joystick or hand held controller. It is controlled by solenoids in the pump. Most likely have a Unimount style mount plow.

My advice, buy the Western solenoid,

Buy A Western unit if you can.
But it is Item #3 for your plow.
The other one #2 is the same BUT it comes with a jumper wire for it to work with the old cable style units.

I don't know about replacing it after 2 years, my old truck I got 6 or 8 years out of it . BUT I always carry a spare with me.

Don't forget fuses , There is a small glass one IN the hand held control its a SFE-6 .

Also there are 2 Blade style fuses in the Harness If You have the Isolation Module set up.
These are a 15 amp and a 7.5 amp .

Hope this helps.

If i remember right the western solenoid part no is 56131k.

The easiest place to get the "western" sticks is through a western dealer. Other wise try Plow Parts Warehouse, we send a bunch of them to them ever fall. They are in Muskegon Mi.

Thanks in advance for any help fellas. I have a cable operated pump and I see 2 types of Western solenoids, a barrel style and a tower style. Can you tell me which I need for my cable pump? Also can I convert my cable pump to a solenoid operated pump (electrically controlled?). I sure would appreciate any advice.

Go with the tower type solenoid, as for switching to an electric type pump, its pretty expensive (about $1400), you have to change the entire power unit (will bolt right into place of your cable pump) , install a harness and controller. Depepnding on what amount of room you have under the hood, you could go with a elelctric/hydralic pump under the hood for less. Barnes, fenner and monarch are a few of the brands of power units you could use, just have to make sure you get the right one.
