Gee- too bad you couldn't have just accidnetally let one in the house!! They make a good Thanksgiving dinner- especially when cooked on a spit wrapped up in foil with some spices!!
Drool.......

I've cooked them (& pheasant as well) with peaches and syrup instead of the usual gravy. The meat is tender and sweet!
I'll prolly end up at my sister's house for T-giving to eat some drier than sawdust bird. At least the muffins should be good. I can count on the Pepsi too!

She could use a turkey fryer it's pretty hard to have a dry one that way. Plus it only takes an hour to cook.

hey festerw-
you don't know the half of it! She has a commercial grade kitchen... no lie! She's actually a pretty good cook 'cept for the trait inherited from our mother to over cook some things. How about green beans that melt in your mouth faster than chocolate? Then there's the table setting with every piece of cutlery and dishware that is laser straight. So straight that a 6' straight edge would prove as having errors! They do that kind of stuff at White House State dinners!! It drives her nuts when I intentionally sneak a piece of cutlery out of alignment!!:greenange
Obsessive compulsive huh? You can bet I'll be rearranging things on the table & counter top just to get a kick out of it!! Then after dinner it's retire to the tv and watch boring NASCAR highlights or A Christmas Story for the umpteenth time! Before I leave, I'll remind my brother-in-law to pack bullets for his annual trip to deer camp, show him a pic or two of what deer look like, and sneak a kick to their snapping, loudmouth mutt in it's azz. They'll be relieved that me & the noisy family have left. Then I'll go home and make a delicous ham and cheese sandwich, sit in the recliner, and watch Sponge Bob or maybe a rerun of the Teutuls brow beating each other!;) ;)
Maybe I should visit your family instead? Do you have a table I can rearrange and a mutt I can kick?;)

Unfortunately my sister is insisting on cooking the turkey in the oven this year, but yes we have tables you could rearrange and 4 dogs you could kick.

Hey Adams, you're right about the dog kickin' emoticon! I know plenty of dogs I'd like to kick. Not that I hate dogs, just a certain few that should've been painted with a laser for a missle strike!

The men in our family have staged an anti-turkey the last couple years. We stand outside and freeze our butts of for a couple hours preparing, pre-heating, frying our own turkey. Keeps us from 2 things: menial chores and dry turkey. Funny how every year the ladies fuss about how much work it is (for us), but it seems that the fried turkey tends to disappear a little quicker. Who would've guessed it?:D
You got two choices- fried or dried!!

It's amazing how many people make "turkey jerky" instead of real turkey. I will have to look into this fried turkey thing- it sounds pretty good. I have had the wild one over a spit a couple of times- but that is more of a summertime thing- takes a long time to cook that way. It's something the local gun club does every year at thier end of summer bash!

Nope- some of us have sisters who know they can't cook, so they avoid the turkeys!! Lol!!
We usually end up going out for Turkey day with the inlaws- their annual treat to the kids. But it looks like this might be one of the last years since we have soo many family members ill this year. Looks like it's time to start some new traditions. Anyone up for a webcam dinner next year?

Bad pic, but this is out my window this morning, we get a daily visit after the snow melts. We see them in winter but they do not come through our yard.
I counted 40 birds this morning.
I was kind of surprised to see some young birds with the cold winter we had.
They liked the left over bird seed that fell out of the feeders so I gave them their own pile.
Todd, thanks for bringing this back up. Somehow I missed it last November. It was a riot.:grinz The last couple of years, my wife has refused to cook a turkey for the family Thanksgiving get-together. The kids really protested but my reasoning was - Why in the world would we want to go to all that trouble to have something that we wouldn't buy or order in a restaurant the rest of the year? They are all grown, so they can do what they want, same as us. Two years ago, my daughter brought a turkey she'd cooked herself. Last year, she went to her boyfriend's family so didn't worry about it.
I like meat loaf better anyway, so my wife fixed meatloaf in the shape of a turkey.
As far as wild turkeys, we get flocks of a hundred or more around here all winter. They're really considered a nuisance since they eat a lot of the farmers' grain.
A couple of years ago, a local guy got into big legal trouble when he deliberately ran down a flock of turkeys with his pickup. Someone happened to be outside with a video camera and filmed him running them down. Picture wound up in the newspaper. Pretty hard for him to tell the judge he couldn't avoid hitting them.

I missed this thread back in November, but saw it the other day when Mick replied. The following day I heard a hen outside the window and took a look. 29 birds, some are out of view but I took a head count right after the photo.

Super Tom!
How'd you like to have him up on the mantel?
That hen has her eye on him too!:shades
Any of you guys been attacked by one?
Around here they're NOT in flocks. They're single, and if you encounter one (some are close to chest high) they will chase you down and attack! I guess it's their defense, being alone and all.
Wouldn't want to get a finger in its beak, you'd be down to 9 then!
