Well, one of my projects has been to repaint the front door. It involved stripping off the old paint, sanding it down, filling in the holes, getting the brass hardware refinished, priming and painting.

Ah, at last today I painted the front door. Yesterday I primed! I'm using an oil based primer/paint for best quality/duration. I purchased the paint at Home Depot (first mistake).

Priming went fine with oil based primer/sealer. Today, paint went on okay. Only when I went to clean up the brush I quickly realized I had painted with latex. The guy at Home Depot gave me a latex based paint instead of oil as requested.

I'm more pissed at myself for not double checking this. Should have realized it, now that I don't recall smelling the oil based paint today like I did yesterday when priming.

Here's my question since I am not a painting pro... can I use the latex paint on top of the oil based primer? What kind of problems might I have here? Should I restrip and start over? I'm hoping not. My recollection is that you can't put oil over latex, but you can put latex over oil. Which stinks since I put all this work into anticipating an oil based finish.

You are correct about the being able to put latex over oil but not oil over latex. if i were you and the door looks alright i would just leave it and wait till it looks like it needs a new paint job no sence wasteing all that work as for protection you still have that coat of oil based primer underneith so you should be good... but if it dosent look good then by all means strip it and start over...

Aaaw man, the first time the humidity hits 76% & up you are gonna regret putting that on. I'd get busy with a heat gun or stripper and do it right.

LOL--- just yanking yer chain! :greenange Adams right... you should be ok for a good spell. When the next time rolls around sand it down and try it again... this time without the few beers prior to the chore!;)

oil over latex IS asking for trouble . I would talk with the home depot manager

Speaking as a contractor/remodeler you are safe in using the oil under the latex. I use an oil based primer to cover water stains, then paint over it with latex with no problem, the oil base repels the water stain, where a latex primer would allow it to seep though. So you will be fine until it needs to be apinted again, but if you specified a oil based paint to go with your primer I would mention it- I have had my problems with Home Despot, but the local management is usually pretty good at tossing you a bone, even if it's a gallon of oil based paint for another project. It will also alert them to a potential problem in the paint department, maybe it's time to review there!
