Yes I searched for this and read the info in other threads, but still have questions. I have a 25 gal. tank sprayer with a 1.6 gpm pump just sitting around. I have always bought treated salt in bulk but if the treated supply runs out I want to be able to wet the salt as it drops down the chute. Like the municipalities do it. I.e. the salt goes down the drag chain and as it falls to the spreader it gets sprayed.

(1)Is this the right pump, 1.6 gpm @ 60psi? Or will it work?

(2) What size nozzles do I run?

(3) How many gallons per ton? I know it probably depends on conditions but need a starting point.

Thanks for the help, Kyle.

Yes that pump should do ok. As for nozzle size I would get one that is fairly large with less than a 1.6 GPM flow rate @ 60 PSI. 8 galls. per ton would be a start point, but if you are pre treating the salt coming out of the spreader I think that it will end up being a higher rate.

I was told by the MAGic distrubutor that applying the product this way is not very effective. You would need a lot more liquid this way compaired to treating the salt in piles.

Well if you get a set up like this you wouldn't waste Magic or other similar products on it. Aren't the municipal trucks set up like this spraying the salt with a brine solution? Or they are using a product made specifically for that purpose I believe.

Probably better off using brine,or liquid mag.It will "wet" quicker than magic,or similar products.

Michigan DOT has done a cost analysis that showed treated salt is less expensive than pre-wetting.

I thought seriously about setting up pre-wets on our trucks, but the cost and maintenance is what kept me from trying it. That and I wanted the treated salt in the truck to keep it from freezing.

If you have the proper setup I don't think that you would use very much\if any more product and still get the same results.
