I was reading in the latest Mill supply catalog on the SIMA ads page it lists discount for members.I called Nextel the other day and was told I'd receive a 10% discount but when calling back today Nextel tells me they can't find any info on SIMA.Is anyone else taking advantage of this? The Mextel people say it might be listed under another name.I will have to call SIMA but I don't think they're open again til monday.Iwas hoping to get this done this weekend as I need a new phone.any suggestions????

I gotta tell you, the Nextel around me is useless. I traded my old phone last year because my plan was up and the crew I was with all had company Nextels and that was the way they wanted everyone who worked with them to go. Ok, no prob. Well, let me tell you, with the exception of where we happened to plow this thing is crap. Walkie-talkie, phone...both are sub-par as far as I'm concerned. As soon as this plan is up I'm switching back to ATT.

I know it's a coverage issue, but I never had nearly as many as them with ATT. I loved the walkie-talkies, but they just didn't work well....

Talk to guys in your area. They may have some suggestions on which provider is best.

Just my thoughts.....

I was able to demo Nextel for a week before I switched. Ask your salesman about it, I wouldn't switch until you find out if the reception is acceptable.

Nextel was pretty good where I needed it and has gotten much better in the 3 years I've had it. There are many more dead areas though with Nextel than Verizon but in my immediate area it's strong.

I must be the exception to the rule, Have had Nextel for over 4 years and never a major problem. The customer support has been great any time I called them. The only time I can't get a signal is when inside a big metal building and the other guys with all the different services can't get out either. Hope my luck stays going

Does anybody know about this discount if you are a SIMA member?

It all depends on your area. I live in a major city and get droppd calls and crappy reception daily. I go to Keywest Fla and the reception's great. Go figure!

Tammy replied in another forum regarding the discount for SIMA members that Nextel pulled out rather last minute. The ad for the discount was to run in the Mill Supply catalog and four other publications. They were able to cancel the run in the other four publications but Mill Supply had already gone to print. SIMA apologizies for the unfortunate circumstances. Needless to say, I guess, SIMA is not happy with Nextel for pulling out. I guess they felt they had enough of the market without using SIMA to gain additional share. I guess that means customer loyalty isn't worth anything from their existing customers. Maybe a note to Nextel expressing disappointment from current customers or otherwise would be in order.

Nextel reception is hit or miss here.Overall though,I wouldnt trade back to Verizon.I do get thr about 90% of my calls, although they are scratchy at times. Nextel customer service has been better than Verizons. Also Verizon on firdays was useless, all circuits were always busy, that only happened twice with Nextel to me.
Pete,(HerkFE), I understand fully why you dont like it,your area has no service at all in many spots,I got thru Warwick/Forida,and you lose calls, and drop them all thru there. You would think by now they would improve service thru there.

Part of the problem with expansion is the public's opposition to additional cell towers. A small minority of tree huggers has been boistrous enough to make public officials believe that the opinion of the majority is opposed.

I personally would much rather see a lone cell tower on a hilltop than all the new rooftops that keep appearing around here!

I agree with you Pelican- it's also too bad they can't look into the new technology towers they have- they are very non invasive, some can be used on existing structures, while others can be made to look like different every day items- like trees! I used to work for Verizon( the landline side) but we did a ton of installs for the high speed lines to run the signal into the conventional phone system, so we got to see some of the new technology out there. In fact in the Faimount,NY area there is a pretty high $$$ housing development that wanted the coverage, but could not stand the look of a traditional tower- so they made the company putting a tower up put up a wooden tower! It looked like a tree and blended into the skyline very well. I also saw similar tchnology used in a historic area to preserve that "authentic" look and feel. Both installations cost the companies providing the service extra $$ but they were able to offer better service in the area than other companies that wouldn't/couldn't spend the extra.

Despite all of the technological advances, cell service/two way service is still "line of sight tecnology" so if you can't "see" the tower, there is a good chance you won't get service. But technology is getting better. I use an all digital phone- no analog backup channel to switch to- and so far I have had excellent luck in most areas- even better than some people with dual band phones. So things are getting better, and if they can improve the handsets like they are, than service for all carriers will continue to improve.

Good luck with whoever you decide to go with! I'm sure you'll get dead spots no matter waht, but it's worth doign a little research to see who has better coverage for the area you are in. Also ask if they have a gaurantee or trial time so you can test it yourself. I know Verizon gives you at least 15 days, and sometims thirty if you a re a high end user, to try their service to see if it works for you, and I think it was Pelican who was allowed a weekend trial run to see if it worked for him, that will help you make a decision since you will have first hand experience on how it will work with you.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out!

Has anyone looked into Verizons new 2 way radio/cell phones yet?

I would reccomend holding off for now- the technology is too new for them, plus if you look at what they are offering for phones- they are the older model that Nextel started with and no longer carries. They are working on the system, so it will get better, but I would wait. If you want to talk to some good people about Verizon service Joe- go down to the Verizon wireless on the corner of Taft and Buckley- ask for John Zych- and then tell him that you were told to ask for "psycho John" He will laugh and know right away who sent you! He is very knowledgeable, and if he doesn't know the answer, he can get it for you. I plan on looking into the two way phones, but not for a little while longer.

Bill

BTW- when you go down to check on tires at Kost- ask for the "Polish" Marty- I guess there are two of them there and he said that is the best way to get him- he will help you out!

The only real benifite that nextel has is the 2 way feature. We have 5 phones for $110 a month free roaming and long distance, free phones.Nextell will cost you $100 per phone sign up. I can never talk with any one who has them I swear they do it on perpouse .

We have been with Nextel since they began, because of the 2-way feature.

I would encourage all snow contractors who use Nextel to contact them and let them know we are very disappointed about their decision to pull out of the agreement with SIMA. Now that they no longer have a corner on the 2-way market, I would think that customer loyalty should be more important to them.
