Today I came home to a copy of:

The Cutting Edge
Fall 2004
Taking Winter By Storm

It is a newsletter from Fisher Engineering much like Open Roads which Western usually puts out mid-winter.

Listed in the pamphlet was information about the 2 new controls, an article about CMS (Certified Maintenance), an article about The Farmers Almanac, an article about eMatch, techtips about Hydraulics, an article about new SIMA training tapes, and information about the ProTube........................

Also there is an offer for a pretty sweet Carhart style Jacket on the back of the pamphlet..........I think I just might order one tomorrow.........................

Anyone else receive this publication in the mail recently???

Why? You should wear in the base angle first. Then get a steel edge, they aren't that much and they scrape great.

Forget that plastic stuff, doesn't scrape worth a dime.

Who uses plastic to scrape with? Yikes!!

By the time you need the cutting edge, the plow is probably out of warranty, so that's probably why they don't offer them?

lol I just found the newsletter today. I had set it aside a week or so ago because I thought it would make for a good thread. I guess I was right.

Are you manufacturing snowplows? They aren't exactly your competition you know!LOL! I know what your saying but tell me you don't own ONE,Chevy or Ford or whatever hat or t-shirt that you bought,i know i have tons,it's just marketing, all the major plow brands have a clothing line of some sort.

This question goes out to anyone that wants to comment.

This is like the third time I have read on here about Fisher plows come without a cutting edge and you have to wear the edge of the plow in first and then add one later.

I’m somewhat new to a lot of this and have been trying to figure out why they would design a product to be used this way. Do all plow manufactures supply the plow minus a cutting edge? I know there are choices as to steel and U edge etc. but the plow I have I could pick what I wanted and it was included in the price. I picked the steel edge and it came with a heat treated high carbon section of a road grader blade mounted. It was ground to a cutting edge and reversible along with being curved to match the curve of the plow. Personally as hard as it is I don’t think I will ever need to flip it in my lifetime.

I’ll attach a picture and will sit back and see if anyone wants to explain.

Thanks : Bud

ON a Fisher, unlike every other plow, The base angle is the cutting edge and is actually replaceable. Originally these were not even puched for bolting on edges. Now Fisher does punch them but says to run the base angle for a couple seasons then bolt a six inch edge on it. If you bolt an edge to the new base angle you are will see that they line up, so you are not saving anything.

Depending on the plowing it can take quite a while to wear the angle or less then a season.

By plastic I meant that silly urethane stuff people swoon over. Nothing cuts like steel.

This is your opinion & you are entitled to it. Calling a material used for cutting edges "silly" is ridiculous. In my opinion, it is silly for someone to use steel cutting edges, as they don't scrape worth a dime, and nothing cuts like urethane. See how silly your comment sounds now? I can't remember if you've posted this, but out of curiousity, how many plows\seasons have you used urethane on\during to help you form these opinions?

Bud,
Like Ct said, it is only the Fisher plows that have this style. So unless you studied a pic of them, or saw it live, or owned one there's no reason to understand this phenomenon. The base angle is the part that trips, and it is a nice thick hunk of steel that is much thicker than the steel cutting edges you can buy. So it works fine as a cutting edge, even though it is not technically called a cutting edge.

If steel didn't work, then manufacturers would not be selling it for fifty years. Yes they are starting to offer options.

Now you are starting to sound like Dino.

I ran one on one plow last year. Varied the routes so that I could try it on many surfaces.

I found that it worked equal to steel in fresh snow and performed great on Concrete pavers. It is also very quiet.

However, on anything that had been driven on like private roads and commercials, it just rode over, came back with a steel edge and got a nice clean scrape 90% of the time.

Did not see any difference in the wear qualities.

Dollar for Dollar, yes it is my opinion that it is not worth it.

A footnote, I cut the edge down to 6'5 ft and we put it on my brothers Jeep, which is used for sidewalks and now those paver driveways.

I have not given up on it, but I do not want the complaints I got last year, so it will not be used on those properties.

Thanks guys for the lesson on Fisher.
I have looked at a few but I guess all the ones I saw had the edge added already.

To my way of looking at it I see each type of edge having its own advantages and disadvantages. To squeegee ice and wet snow clean from black top without leaving marks I can see the U edge is the way to go. And I have to think steel for the really hard wearing stuff. Highway plowing tar and chip roads etc. not having used the U edge I am only speculating from what I have seen.

As for the steel edges I see they seem to just be flat bars of steel with no angles to aid in cutting on them to start with. I’m assuming you do the same thing let them wear some so you get a cutting edge.

The geometry on my edge is such that it tries to dig through a packed surface just like a cutting blade would in a wood plane. When I hit a tree root sticking above the ground I notice I shave it down to a smooth flat surface. And the way the blade is curved it seems to start the snow curling right from the start of the cut.

I’m surprised that more research hasn’t went into cutting edge design.

I just put in an order for 2 of them for Bill and I............The reason for this is that I will be sending them to my embroyderer to have Creative Landscapes embroydered on them...............

Thats the reason I ordered them :)

Besides the fact that they are a really sharp looking winter jacket to have in the truck during snow storms............

When I go to the big show in Vegas for my line of bussiness I tee shirts that have brand names but did i pay no way did i get jeckets yeas pay for them sure for good ones but they had no names. MY thinking may be caveman like is i will wear your shirt or fishers or who evere but i get it for free if i got to pay i want mine name on it or no name if it is some kind of promo that i have to buy so much stuff to get one. But no argument that the fisher jacket looks good.

Ok, after all this talk about a Fisher snowplow jacket, I would really like to see a picture of one, to see what all the hype is about. Anyone have a good picture of one? How about a picture of a Western one? Cat, I see your point, as well as everyone elses. If its a nice jacket, and keeps me warm, Id buy one, but free would be good too. :) Mike

Not to get way off topic, but I am interested in what show you go to in Vegas? My Uncle in law runs a booth for the SEMA show. We get passes and let me tell you it is impressive.

That ConEX show is awsome in Vegas, unbelievable amount of equipment all in one place, I have been twice and it was great both times, and you cant beat the city that it is held in either.just my two cents.

The bas-turds forgot me! Since I just repainted the plow, I'm now glad I didn't bother to take time to paint the black ink-blot on the front of the blade!
