View Full Version : Exhaust manifold bolt broken 99 6.0 Chevy
Last week I started hearing an exhaust leak on my 99 silverado with the 6.0. I took it to Tuffy today for a free estimate and found out one of the exhaust manifold bolts is broken off flush with the head. OUCH!!:headwall
I am wondering if anyone has seen this?? Is it fixable with the head still on the truck (drivers side and it is the front bolt)?? Hate to ruin the head.
Also I wasn't happy about the fact the truck needs 4 new rotors and brake pads. More money!!!
Maybe I will just trade it and get a new one as they are trying to give them away right now:D

If the manifold is still on,you can use it as a guide to try and get a narrow chisel in there and pound a groove in it.You can then use an impact driver,or screwdriver bit to try and turn it out.If it won't move, the manifold will have to come off.
With the manifold out,you may be able to use a chisel,or air hammer to work it around and get it loose.
You may also be able to drill it out,and use an easy out.

One way I've used over the years, if you can see the broken bolt at all is to weld a gob of metal to it a little at a time, till you get enough sticking out to put a pair of vice grips on. This requires that you have access to the broken stud. I usually use a small oxy/acetyene torch to do this, and you have to be very careful not to weld the manifold to the end of the stud:headwall Take it slow and easy as you built up the metal. The heat from welding will loosen the broken stud and it will turn out quite easy 99% of the time. I've have also used my mig if the broken bolt has not broken off flush with part, to built up some new metal to turn the stud out with.

hey ive done a lot of bolt breaking in my time. and alot of the time, i just spray pb blaster on it through out a day or two , then use the good old easy outs....
Well I have bought a new truck. Well almost bought one I did everything but sign the final paperwork tonight. Not sure if I am going through with it though as its hard to see that payment go up. I think I am getting a good deal though
2500 hd Reg Cab long box
4x4
plow prep
power locks windows mirrors
cd
cruise
chrome bumpers
towing package
Truck lists for $31540 I am getting it for $22340.43. Rolling some negative equity in and my payment is $445-460 a month for 60.
What do you guys think?? I am worried about my current truck starting to nickle and dime me it has low miles but right now it needs some work about $800 worth. I don't mind working on the brakes and that but I just don't have the time. So really the new mount and harness for my plow cost is offset with these repairs. Plus I get a 5 year newer truck..
