Funny this should come up today.

I went up to Rapid City, SD On Thursday two pick up to Vbox spreaders that I won off ebay. I left at 4 am yesterday. On the way up my 7.3 powerstroke had little power into a big head wind. Did not know what was wrong. Drove and drove and drove (it is about 450 miles each way). Till the SES light came on. Anyone who has listened to me ramble knows that my 7.3 has been a true nightmare from day one. 10 times on the tow truck.

I get to Rapid City and both Ford dealers refused to look at my truck or read codes at 3pm. Said they would not look at my truck till Monday.

I decided that SES usually means some emmission sensor and decided that I was going to head home. Truck was a turd in the mountains. Slowed down to 30 mph on some grades, but I was getting closer to home. At 430 am on Friday, truck just is a dog. Pull off into a parking lot and Call AAA. (FYI best 87 dollars I ever spent) While talking to AAA, truck dies. Look under truck and there is about 3-4 quarts of oil on the ground. I blew the O rings out of the high pressure oil line. Wait three hours for AAA, pay 75 bucks to have my trailer towed with me and the truck.

Dealer replaces o-rings and declared truck AOK. Get back out onto the highway and it is still a dog. Go back to dealer. Dealer had it the rest of the afternoon. Dealer called a few minutes ago. Hey dummy, your air filter is clogged. I am religous about maintainence and this air filter had only 6k miles on it.

I guess all the dirt roads that it has been on in the last month or two took its toll.

I guess pushing the truck so hard with no air blew those o -rings (they are a common failure and I did not have the latest/best design)

NEVER thought to check something so simple, I just assumed that it was ok. It was an OEM ford part too.

Just thought you would like to hear of my stupidity.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used K&N air filter???

Looks like I'll be pulling the K&N out of my daily driver.

K&N filters have ruined more Cummins diesels than you could imagine.. The study may be new but CTD/ TDR owners have known for yrs that the K& N doesent filter adequetly thru oil samples.

Just about everybody agrees that K&N sucks at filtering. It was just kinda nice to see it in documentable forms. The dirt on the intake and bad UOA by some seem hit or miss(some people dont have problems) but I think thats more in relation to operating conditions. I dont change my filters till the little gauge dealy gets sucked in. But I take a looksie at oil changes and whack off the chunks. A dirty filter filters better and there isnt any reason to change it if its not posing a restriction to the motor.

Most cummins guys use fleetguard, they are the OEM supplier to cummins and a cummins owned company. There filters are warranty approved, top notch, and do a great job.I get mine thru Geno's garage http://www.genosgarage.com/. They have excellent service, fast shipping and good prices. id think Gm guys would use Delco.I have used Napa/Wix filters for alot of my equipment, they too are good filters IMO.

Fleetguard,Baldwin,Wix,Donaldson,Napa all make good filters.Stay away from parts store bargain brands.

Most OEM or dealer filters are made by an outside or aftermarket manufacturer, and they just charge you more money,as they have to mark them up.Dodge CTD OEM air filter is over $100.00 at the dealer, but it's like $23.00 from most truck shops (Fleetguard).
