I noticed that my front drivesaft on my 1994 K1500 had a fair bit of play in it. The trucks has over 350000 km on it and I still has all the original u joints in it except for 1 that was replaced last year. The mechanic I took it to said he has never seen one like this before. He called the dealer to get a price on the parts and they said that they have sold over 20 driveshaft so far this year.
Is this a common problem with these trucks or is just one of those things that tend to wear after 10 years of plowing?

Is it the slip yoke that's worn ? It's a fairly common problem.
You can have the old slip yoke cut off,and replaced, and throw new u-joints in too.It may be cheaper than a whole new shaft.I could do it for you.If you want to pull the shaft,I can pick it up when I come out to grab the winter rims.

Where is the play at? Is it vibrating or not engaging the front wheels and making a grinding sound? My boss had the spines on the slip yolk strip on his truck. He did not say how but it (just happened) My driveshaft cost 150 bucks at Carquest for the front. This is why I had to replace mine.....

I could not tell exactly where the play was. There was no vibration or grinding noise and the 4 wd was engaging fine. There may have been a clunk when first engaged but that was about it. There was about 1 inch up and down movement to it. Thanks for the offer Chris but I already told the guy to go ahead and order the new shaft. I wished I had asked you guys before.
