I recieved a letter from the local salt supplier (the same one in my photo album) that listed the preseason prices at 59.90 per ton plus taxes and delivery. I know this is going to be a bad year when they start out telling you your going to get screwed this season on prices AND they included an article from the WSJ about the cost of shipping overseas. The kicker is the article is dated November 2003? Sounds to me like they are planning on gouging us (locals) this year and setting us up for some really bad prices as soon as the snow hits.
What are some of your prices so far?

Well I was watching one of those shows on discovery channel or one of those channels and they showed where we get our salt for the streets .It was unbelivable how much of it there is below we will never run out so I really don't know how they come up with there is gonna be a shortag they never stop digging. I wish i knew what the name of the program was every one would be surprised.
Our price went up a little over $8.00 more per ton from the last few years. We were lucky though they held there price for us for the last 4 years straight, so I guess it is just catching up with us, we are going to shop around a little bit but think we will end up staying with International Salt. Just my two cents.

JD Plower Just wondering, what taxes do you have to pay?
Also, I'm seeing 50lb bagged at $3.20 is this a good price?

My load came to almost $65 a ton after taxs/ delivery och that hurt. . I ask for a small load and guy told me that they are only doing trailers loads .My land lord does not like big pile hanging around and I had 10 tons left from last yr. So now I have 47 tons. The upside of this is I know I will not run out and I know it's is going to make me good money. Down side I can't aford to get my spreader sand blasted and painted till the spring. The extra money put aside for the spreader is gone.

Here in the Chicago market salt rates are UP. Last season I had several suppliers call the number on the side of my truck wanting to sell me salt right at $30.00 a ton delivered.
This year after calling about four suppliers I finally got a comment letter for 200ton at 70% min. 130% max for a fixed rate of $44.00 a ton delivered.
I did find two suppliers that would do $38.00 a ton but when their supplier ran out so do I.
Just finished up the salt bin and hope to be able to keep about 40-50 tons at the yard. Running three truck you will be suprised how fast teh salt goes when you have it on hand. Also nice to see the billing going out too.
Went with the comment letter to be sure of the rate. Seems like the shortage around here is always in Jan/Feb. and if you do not have enough supply on the gound you are going to pay a huge increase. I use about 150ton last season, I am confident I will use 140 this season as the shortage of salt is being blamed on the muni's sucking it all up. There even have been several article inthe local paper about the City increasing its budget for salt at a special commiting meeting. So I guess we might be doing alot of salting this season, which is fine with me.

Priced out at Local Mill for $50.00 a ton here down 4 bucks from last winter. With bulk it always goes buy supply and demand once it starts snowing. The road commisions supplies and demands come before anyone. Demand goes up price goes up every winter:eek:
