I just finished replacing the rear differential on my 75 GMC 3/4 ton truck. Took it out for a test drive and had to return home with a lot of clanging going on. My clutch went down to the floor and stayed there. I would like to replace myself due to just spending money on the rear. Can anyone tell me how. Tips on pulling the transmission. I have done lots of work on this truck but are unfamiliar with the clutch. Is there a trick to pulling the transmission to get to the clutch, after this is done, where do I go from there?

It sound like pressure plate fingers let go. If it is a 2wd truck, It is not to bad to work on and tranny is easy (though heavy) to pull to get too clutch. If it is a 4x4, sometimes if you remove shifter handle/stick and 4x4 shifter you can unbolt frame cross over mounts and slide tranny abd xfer case back as a unit while propped up with a tranny jack in front under tranny.

I found it easier to yard the motor out to do the clutch.
Started at 10:00 am, changed the pan gaskets, rear main seal, timing chain cover gaskets, and valve cover gaskets while I waited for the flywheel to be turned. Put it all back in and test drove. Showered in time for dinner. Piece of cake.
Trans and t-case are super heavy and a pita if you don't have a decent jack on concrete. When I did the trans I fabbed a mount which I welded to the "puck" of my floor jack. (only after I nearly killed myself trying the half assed way!) Don't think for a minute that you can muscle this box in or out of your truck while laying on your back! Trans is 175lbs and the NP205 is as much again or more.

A tranny jack is a must for this. In the 70's I knew a guy that could take them thing out and replace them by himself! He had not a big guy but had short strong arms and handle it alone. Not me, I would not even try it without a jack.
