The wheel in the spare tire of our 96 K3500 pickup has gotten pretty badly beaten up by rust. I have a number of wheels from my old 79s (one was a one ton pickup, and the other is a 3/4 ton.)
Can I take for granted that the wheels from the older trucks will swap with the 96, or is there some other difference besides bolt pattern that I should check?

Yes they will bolt on. They do not have the same back spacing though. The IFS trucks run a lot more back spsacing than the older solid axle trucks.

The IFS trucks run 5" of backspacing, and I think the older trucks have 3.75" of BS, does that sound right?

I got a flat on my 97 Chevy 1/2 4x4 6 bolt...NO spare !
I borrowed a 6 bolt rim and tire from my bud off his 75
1/2 4x4 Chevy. Mine was 16 in. ....his was 15 in.
Worked and fit fine on the front. Cleared the disc brake
and all the gear till the storm was over and I bought
another tire...And scrounged up a spare!................geo:D
The rims for my 88 K3500 have the same backspacing as rims from an early 80s K20. The 1500 models and 6 lug 2500s use the different backspacing. The backspacing difference between the 1500 and 2500 is why the had to put those rustyerfenders flares on the 2500 and up.
