What's everyone's opinion on upgrading the factory distributor ? It's a 72 4 bolt 350 with an "RV" cam, basically stock heads and crank, HO alternator with dual batteries, straight dual exhaust and an Edelbrock intake and carb. Is there enough performance gained from say a Mallory dist to warrant the $150 ? Thanks for your tips - guttyy

Performance gain won't be spectacular but not having to fuss with the breaker points makes it well worth the money.

I should have been a little clearer - it has a factory HEI installed - I'm asking if there is a measurable difference from the factory HEI to a high output HEI - thanks - guttyy

Not worth the bother or money.

ditto, unless the fact HEI is fubar a stock HEI in good repair and tune will work just as good as a high zoot unit for all but the highly built applications.

Like the others have said, the factory HEI is plenty strong.Just make sure the dist shaft isn't siezing up at the advance mechanism, and use a good quality cap and rotor. Some of the cheaper caps will burn through and misfire in the coil area.

I have always been happy with the HEI. Use brass and good wires. Plugs gapped at .060" (ask for 1975 model). I have never fooled with the advance springs but am going to try lighter ones just for kicks.

Thanks for the good advice everyone - I had two stock distributors, used the tightest one and no problems at all. I always use caps with brass - the few extra bucks are well worth it. Thanks again
