Ford May Build V-6 Diesel
June 22, 2004
Ford may finally build a light-duty V-6 diesel for its pickup trucks and SUVs. Ford and partner PSA jointly developed a new 2.7-liter diesel V-6, produced at Dagenham, United Kingdom.
Direct-injection common-rail turbodiesels offer a 30 percent fuel-economy improvement over comparable gas engines. Ford had been considering a V-6 diesel from Navistar, which builds the Power Stroke for Ford’s heavy-duty pickups, or from Cummins.
The 24-valve 60-degree V-6 diesel would fit U.S. vehicles such as the Explorer.
