As ford is the ONLY manufacturer of a SRW 3500 (1 ton ) reg cab pickup, any feedback as to the 6 l diesel and 5 speed auto?

Doesn't Dodge make a srw 350 now? I could have sworn they did.

Any way back to the original question. My guess is your asking this question due to the motors infamous beginnings. Ford has unfortunately damaged its rep with the introduction of this engine before all the bugs had been worked out and now are paying for it with people saying things like the 6.0l engine is junk. That’s what happens when a motor has as many problems as this one did (notice the tense) and it reminds me of the early GM 6.5L models that had many injector pump issues. That motor suffered unfairly from that rep until it was replaced with the duramax even though those issues had been dealt with a long time ago. I don't own a 6.0 however I do belong to and surf many ford sites that have diesel sections and in doing so I have noticed a considerable drop in complaints from 6.0 owners, especially from the 2004 owners as compared to the people who own 2003 models. People still post problems with the 2004 models but not anywhere near as much as the 03 owners. My advice is to go to the ford sites and read through what has been posted on the newer models but remember, few people go on those sites and post things like "truck ran great today" they post about problems. Personally I wouldn't hesitate in buying a new 6.0 diesel. Unfortunatley the motors first impressions was one of a disaster and some people will consider the engine junk forever and thats their right however its starting to be more about brand bashing then actual problems. Good luck and have fun surffing.

BTW I think Fred Pickering has a 6.0l (don't know the year) so maybe he could help.

Hi Bill,i have one of the early 6.0l engines, january 03 build,i have not had any problems with mine at all,i am very happy with the engine and the truck. If you a little research on the Ford truck sites you will soon see that the 04 trucks have very few engine related problems now,the 03 engine that i have,it seems from what i found is you either got a good one,or one with problems, most were injector related, and sensors,i have heard that the engine computer on the 03 were also some of the problem,Ford should have left the programing to International, the VT365 as it is known in International trucks has had virtually no engine problems at all.And yes Fred does own 2 Ford 6.0l trucks now,a late 03,and a new 04,i believe he is happy with his also.

We bought three 03's and one 04. The only trouble we have had is on our 450. The alternator went, electric clutch on air conditioning pump, then a whole new pump and clutch, and a new turbo. On the 550 the fuel line came apart at the seperator and caught fire. Put it out just in time. Other than that the trucks run just fine. In fact, there is a big difference in power from our 7.3's. I would not be afraid to buy another at all.

Good Luck

I have two a late 03 in my 350 service truck and the 04 which i brought to erie which is a 350 srw 9900gvw the engines perform well for me like Mike Nelson said a big diff in power than from the 7.3l they are smoother running quiet and are decent mileage engines i can tell you that i got a early production 03 last year that made it a hour out of detriot and blew and yes i still had enough faith in ford to get these two others, coming home from erie with a 1,000lbs plus 8-10 hanging off the front i would have to watch my speed has it was easy to hit the high end of the speedo the power is awesome.

Has far has the f350 srw being the only one around iam pretty sure like cat said chevy offers one but i guess my question would be why? maybe it should be fords building the only 1ton srw with a real front axle:D

I love mine. We've had no problems with it at all. Perfect for its missions and it has tons of torque and power. Plowed half the route earlier this year without putting it in 4WD. The engine is made here in Indianapolis and one of the engineers told me they have dyno tested the motor at significantly higher HP than what is in the sales literature.

They added keyless entry to the '04 (available as an accessory for '00-'03) and Phillips has solved the HID headlight deficiency (post on this subject forthcoming)

Thanx for all the input. Yes Dodge does make a SRW, but not in a reg cab, I'll check GM out too. Went to the Ford dealer today, the HP & torque figures for the 6.0 are impressive..

Sorry, GM has a SRW reg cab, and a BIG block gas engine, just what I love.

Are you saying that GM only has it in a gas version ? Because I saw a 2004 at the mascon show with the D/A combo .

currently have 15 ford diesels in fleet, 3 of those with the 6L psd. I own a 250 with a 7.3PSD and am ready to trade it in. the new 6L is quiet, extremely smooth, and in the tow/haul mode you feel it shift, it is very responsive. overall a very nice package.

so far no problems with the 04's, although very little mileage on the trucks so far. Have a few friends with the 03's, they had some small problems with the engine, which I think ford worked out for the later units.
