Yes folks, today is Veteran's Day, a holiday often overlooked and seen as just another day off from the grind or a reason to go shopping.

In respect of those who have given and many who still give so much, take a few moments from your day to give thanks and prayers to those preserving freedom, wherever it may be.

As far back as I was first able to read, I can recall seeing bumper stickers "If you love your freedom, thank a Vet!". The message still rings true today.

Thank you U.S. Veterans!!

Thank you for the reminder, Pelican.

To take it a step further, there's nothing to prevent you from thanking a veteran, directly and in person, on any day of the year. I've done so on numerous occasions and they always seem to appreciate it.

Thanks, to all who haved served our country.

THANKS TO ALL THE VETERNS !

This was in our bulletin sunday, I thought it was great...

I want you to close your eyes and picture in your mind the soldier at Valley Forge, as he holds his musket in his bloody hands.

He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle and emotionally scarred from the eternity away from his family, surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war.

He stands though, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath. He looks at us now in anger and disgust and tells us this....

I gave you a birthright of freedom born in the Constitution, and now your children graduate too illiterate to read it.

I fought in the snow, barefoot, to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at home because it rains.

I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent on critical issues, because it might be bad for business.

I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen democracy from the people.

Its the soldier, not the reporter, who gives you the freedom of the press.
Its the soldier, not the poet, who gives you the freedom of speech.
Its the soldier, not the campus organizer, who allows you to demonstrate.
Its the soldier who sallutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag, that allows the protester to burn the flag !!

Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our US ground troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, AND all over this world.

OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, A SODIER DIED TODAY

Very well said Pelican.

A little history one Veteran's day for those who might care to know:
The first "Vet's Day" celebration was November 11, 1953 at Emporia Kansas. It was then that the American Legion & Veterans of Foreign War Posts of Emporia organized their Veterans Day Parade and memorial service for the first time. President Eisenhower signed the bill into effect in 1954.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marked the end of WWII, and is why this day was chosen.

And while we remember the brave men and women who served and are currently serving our country, lets also remember those innocent civilians/heroes who gave their lives

I would first like to say that I agree with everything that was said before my post, and THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SAID IT!!

I was covered in goosebumps, and also had a tear in my eye- especially when I got to JCurtis's post about the 9/11 tragedy- that date will forever haunt me since I lost 343 brothers and sisters that day. They were men and women that I had never met, but being a volunteer fireman we were still brethren. I consider myself lucky to have found a group of people such as yourselves who TRULY care. Not only about their fellow members here, but about life in general. I have never felt such camraderie amongst a group of people out of which a small percentage can say that they have actually met in person. To be able to say that I am a member of such a group makes me proud, and humble at the same time for I can see how nothing would get done if it were not for people such as yourselves.

You all owe yourselves a pat on the back, and I salute all of you, as well as those who are now, or ever were members of the armed forces- for if it were not for them defending our freedom, we would not have this chance to be here. So once again, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!!
:salute :salute :salute :salute :salute :salute :salute

My grandpa served in WWII. He passed away over five years ago, now. 3 months after, we got a letter from another soldier who served with him. He told us how they met, what life was like, and then shared a story that brings a tear to my eye. He talked about how they were hiding behind a wall, and had to move to another spot. My grandpa went first, and then the other soldier came. They were under fire the whole time, and the other soldier lost his helmet. My grandpa threw his helmet to him, he didn't worry about himself, just getting the other soldeir home safe. The other soldier hit the dirt and put the helmet on. not 2 seconds later, 3 bullets rang off the helmet. My grandpa saved his life. The most touching part was that he never mentioned it to any of us, he didn't brag or anything. He served his country, and saved lives, and like so many of this country's great soldiers, did not get properly recognized for it.

So say a prayer on this Veteran’s Day, and may God bless you, our troops, and those that have already served, whether they are here now, or not.
