The answer is--->>>>>>> someone forgot to add the return line from the tranny to the cooler.
Dealer called me today in a panic..said run outside and look at your tranny. about 1,100 trucks were shipped without a return line and the tranny's were blowing up anywhere from 5 - 300 miles later. Mines fine :)

Its to early for an April fools joke:D .If they forgot to put a return line it wouldnt make it on the car carrier, the fluid would be spewing all over the ground the instant they fired it up.The only way they would run is with a loop hose from the outlet to inlet on the cooler lines out of the trans.

I agree with you on this one John, but the tranny and the rad. both have metal plugs in them. I just saw one this morning...I can't stop laughing............
The trans is not even tapped for this line. I saw a photo of the problems yesterday but since it was of no concern to my truck, I did not pay a lot of attention. The correct case has 2 boss's but the one's that are no good have only one boss for this connection. Some new engineering change but some old case's ended up in the system.
Dealers can't sell any 04 3/4 until they check them out. Not all truck affected, about 2000 went out before the problem was discovered.
DETROIT, March 15 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - News) said on Monday that it temporarily halted shipments of some of its large pickup trucks, vans and SUVs on Friday due to a problem with the transmissions.

About 25,000 vehicles were potentially affected by a faulty pump in the transmission that could prevent lubrication from reaching overdrive gearset bearings, GM spokeswoman Debbie Frakes said.
"We detected the problem and we fixed it immediately before most of these got into customer hands," Frakes said. "We were back shipping by the end of the day."
The transmissions, produced at GM's Willow Run, Mich., transmission plant, were installed in the Chevrolet Express and Silverado, GMC Suburban, Sierra, Savana and Yukon XL and W4 medium duty trucks.
GM has notified the owners of about 8,000 vehicles that their truck may have been affected. The automaker believes that only about 2,000 of those 8,000 vehicles actually have the faulty pump, Frakes said.

From the Buffalo News this morning:
Problem found with transmissions
3/16/2004
DETROIT (AP) - General Motors Corp. has discovered a problem with some 2004 full-size pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans that could cause transmissions for many as 8,000 vehicles already on the road to fail.
The company said Monday it also asked dealers not to sell or deliver more vehicles with the transmissions from its Willow Run plant to customers until they can be inspected. The automaker said the problem does not pose a safety issue.
The transmissions could fail because of a faulty pump that may prevent lubrication from reaching overdrive gearset bearings.
About 25,000 vehicles - including the Chevrolet Express and Silverado, GMC Suburban, Sierra, Savana and Yukon XL and W4 medium-duty truck - are at risk, spokeswoman Debbie Frakes said. Only about a quarter of them are likely to actually have the problem, she said.
In addition to about 8,000 vehicles that have been delivered to customers, another 17,000 were in transit between assembly plants and dealers when the problem was discovered.
GM owners are being told to use third gear rather than overdrive until they can have their vehicles inspected for no cost at a dealership service center. GM is notifying vehicle owners of the potential problem through phone calls and letters, but there is no recall because it is not a safety issue.
Z71----- The 04' crew cab I'm sitting next to is tapped ,,,but plugged the other 2 trucks are not tapped like you stated. This is pretty funny.. and all I complained about was a spare tire.
