The oil pan on my 99 is supposidly rotted out, dealer wants $ 500.00 to chage it. Is it that hard? On a 1999, K3500 454 engine. Is it normal for the pan to rot out that quickly?

If it was a ford I would say it got it's lifetime. We used to change them every 2-3 yrs. But seeing it's a chevy and my 90' oil pan is still in perfect condition I would have to say ummmm. With the amount of salt put down over the last few winters anything is possible. For $500 let them do it and save the grief.

Wouldn't it be less expensive to let my normal garage do it vs. dealer. Aftermarket parts & less labor ($55/hr vs. $ 80+), & mechanics know there stuff vs. kids out of school at dealer.

If you can get it done cheaper at a local garage, then go for it.The dealers can be a little pricey.Just make sure whoever does it has experience in doing an oil pan on one of these trucks,so they know what they are doing.

Between this year and last we replaced three oil pans, all on Chevys. The newest was a 98 with 36,000 miles and the oldest was a 93 with 110,000 miles, but it looked like that one had been replaced before. I don't know what it cost.

I had a small wet rust spot on my 98 GMC 454 pan, with 47,000 miles, so I took it to the dealer, since I had an extended warranty, and had them look at it. The kid picked at it and "bam"! Oil streaming out all over.
They gave me a loaner truck and good thing, the oil cooling lines, dip stick tube and transmission lines were rotted and broke when they went to put the pan in.
It took several more days to get parts and when done, I got it home and the pan gasket wasn't seated right and oil was on exhaust, smoke everywhere.
The gasket was rolled over when installed. They fixed it finally and I am happy now but after seeing what a pain it was and how much time was put into getting it back, I am glad I had a dealer do it and got a loaner truck.
No charge for anything except $100 deductible. If I had to pay for it, he said about $500. Check with your dealer and remember to include the other items.
How many miles on yours?

My '92 started leaking this past summer, I finally got around to changing it. The pan was about $150, gasket set about $25 and dip stick tube about $10. It's not too hard if you're patient.
I had one of the oil cooler lines break, that added about $65 to the job.

I got under truck yesterday & looked at it, surface rust(no oil leaking) & pan has not become porous. Still solid I pushed on it pretty good (it only sheet metal). Used a rust neutraizer on it after a quick scrape down, then painted with Rust-olem. Should be fine. I asked my mechinc about it that was what he told me to do, said we should paint them peridically because they get hot then all the salt hits them & makes corrosion worse, told me to paint them all every year or two with thick paint should help. Amazing what dealerships try to sell you.
