I am on a mini vacation in NH at the moment, my dads pickup is a 05 GMC. Today the pump started to whine and started steering hard, The fluid smells a little burnt. I know I can get the pump changed when I get back home.
The one concern I have is the pump completely failing and taking out the belt, my one question is, Is there a part number for a belt that would work to eliminate the pump? It would be nice just to have one in the truck, for peace of mind.
Thanks

Sometimes those early 90s to present GM trucks have a
EVO sensor that controls power steering "boost/operation"
at certain engine speeds. If it fails it cause high steering
effort at low speeds. Had this issue on my 01.
But burnt fluid and pump noise added also it sounds like the
pump in your case....................

The power steering may be power assist to the brakes. If that is the case, I would be hesitant to just disconnecting it. Are you towing anything? Is it loaded? A power steering pump sounds cheap, compared to an accident.

Yeah I figured it being the pump, we made it home but it got harder to steer and a lot louder too by the time we got back. Got a pump on order for it, but it is a few days out. The idea of the belt was a idea for a quick solution in case something did happen to it. Very surprised I had to order the pump though.
No worry in disconnect the pump on this truck the brakes are vacuum boosted.
