We are looking at a contract, must be 30% MBE, and MBE must be certified. How do you find certified MBE's.

MBE, minority business enterprise.
Mike I take it this is a publicly funded project? I know my uncle had to go through some certification process for work on local goverment projects like the big dig. Around here its called being SOMBA (No I don't know what that stands for) and its not a lot of fun to get. It may take as long as a year to obtain and the worst part is, it never led to any work.
Try this site to start with http://www.ethnicmajority.com/MBEcontracts.htm it might help you get started.

You'll also see the letters WBE--Women's Business Enterprise. There's a certian "set aside" for them too. In the Pittsburgh area, the county (Allegheny County PA, in this case), has a certification program, and the same website that provides information on the certification process lists those businesses which are certified. It seems like the county certification is accepted by surrounding counties, and the state as well.

This contract is for a large corporation, & I believe for landscape maintenance. Don't know if I can find any subs that are certified. My friends that are minorities, are not certified, talked to him said paperwork is 1-1 1/2" thick. Potential is there for a lot of work, but just to bid is going to take alot of effort.

GUYS..............My NYS S-Corp is set up so my mother is the
president and she holds 51% of the "stock", I hold 49%.
We are a certified NYS MBE/WBE corp.
Our lawyer who takes care of our corp. business set it up thru
NYS and the fed. agencies.
Lots of tax advantages and loan deals around if ya jump thru
the right hoops!
It is also a BIG advantage to bid ANY state or fed jobs. Even
if you charge the most !
A certain % of the work MUST go to a WBE/MBE on state and fed. jobs or projects !
When I was a union painter...Most contractors had 2 companies.
One run by the husband...The other run by the wife !
Guess who bid MORE and got the job?.....................geo
NOTE: A lot of companies are going LLCs now instead of
corps. or s-corps esp. in NY and elsewhere.
It seems with a LLC (limited liability corp.) your assets are
sheilded better................

Sonjaab,
You took the words right out of my mouth, put the company in your wife's name, instant MBE. The purchasing dept. of a company I know of is now going for their proper balance of MBE, because some division, somewhere, is doing some government work, so they need to up their quota. Now some BIG companies are walking in saying, hey, buy from us, we are minority owned. GRe.......attt, now we have laws on the books to make a millionarre minority bunsiness owners get business on that fact. Another worthy law. Guess we forgot how capitalism works.
Soon the gov will tell us we have to buy at least one snowbear plow to keep them in business.
