Up until now I have only used Delco tranny filter and gastets kits for my yearly tranny service. This year I pick-up a aftermarket filter and gasket from my local parts store. It was only $12 compared to about $40 from the GM dealer for the kit. Are these filter kits safe or is it worth the extra $ for the dealer kit?

Most of the aftermarket filter kits meet or exceed OEM specifications.
We use the GK filter kits. The filters seem to be just as good,if not better than the OEM.The main reason we use them is the high quality Fel-Pro gasket. It's a very tough leathery type material instead of cork, and they never leak. They are also reusable,so if your stuck, and need to reuse it,you can.
While you have the pan off,now would be a good time to put a drain plug in it,so future changes will be easier. You can buy a kit,or make your own.
I usually just weld a 1/2" NF nut onto the pan,and use a 1/2" NF drain plug and gasket. If I remember correctly, you had a small MIG when I dropped by the other day,it would be perfect for the job.Weld the nut onto the pan FIRST,and then use water to make sure it doesn't leak.Once your sure it's sealed,THEN drill the hole through it for the bolt, just be careful not to damage the threads. That way if you screw up and can't get a good seal, you can at least reuse the pan,as there are no holes in it yet.
