Guys.........A few fellas from my neck of the woods have been
working construction in a few NYC Burroughs .
One guy has a bone stock Dodge . He has recieved 4 $150
tickets for lettering on his truck because it is smaller than 3"
or so and also because he has commercial plates.
Weird.... truck is bone stock and sez "sport" on the fenders
and 4x4 on the rear quarters and DODGE on the tailgate !
Is this possible? His bud has a Z-71 and recieved NO tickets
because his factory Z stickers are larger than 3".
He is coming home this weekend and we are gonna take the
"offending" stickers off.
Is this true ?....Any NYC guys know the scoop?.....geo
George, you're saying the only lettering is the factory lettering ("Sport", "4x4", and "Dodge")? (scratching head smilie)
Something wrong somewhere.

MICK.......Yup...Bone stock factory stickers ! GOTTA GO!
Seems any NY commercial tag truck in NYC with stickers, signs,
lettering on their truck they be larger than 3" or so.....
If NOT ticket! Parked, driving, no matter..........
If I was the cop ....I would be afraid to give a ticket in any
constructions site...........A BIG brick may FALL on you!
Measure any GM sticker or ford off road sticker ...Larger than
3" for total size of sticker. Seems Mopar factory stickers are
less than 3" and considered seperate.
Weird....But this is NYC!...LOL:confused:

We have some strange laws in this state regarding trucks but I think that one takes the cake

I'm in NYC. Two things to consider here. One, if you have commercial plates in NYC you must have the company name on the side of the truck as well as the address. Lettering must be three inches. Two, since Bloomberg has become mayor, tickets are handed out like crazy. Seems like they are often for crazy interpretations of the laws. I have NEVER heard of someone getting a ticket for any lettering outside of what is specified including factory stock details. That is INSANE- EVEN FOR NYC!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like that guy just needed to make his quota. Any chance he mouthed off at the cop? That'll do it to.
I'll check with my lettering guy tomorrow. I was just there today as a matter of fact.
My advice would be to leave the stock lettering alone. I'm sure he can beat that ticket. Unless the ticket was for no company name on the doors. That's a legit ticket for a vehicle with commercial plates. Who gave him the tickets? A regular cop or truck enforcement? Was he stopped for something else or specifically for this?
Hey- wanna hear another crazy NYC law that was finally changed recently? Used to be that any pick up without a cap had to have commercial plates. PITA but fine. Problem was you then had to put a name and address on the side now that you had commercial plates! For a pick up to get passenger plates you needed to have a permanently mounted cap (no covers) and SEATS bolted in the back!!!!!!!! Even for NYC this was beyond moronic!!!!!!!!!!
Like I said, I'll check into it tomorrow. Double check that those tix are not for lack of company name and address on door. If he's got that on his doors, then I'm sure he can beat the ticket.

That is the stupidest thing i have ever heard.Well then if that is the case I would go back to the dealer where he bought it and let them pay the fine and remove the offending letters. They should of know about it if he bought the truck new and in NY. But I'm still scatching my head on a stock p/u with the factory stuff on it and not his name and number ?

Do you suppose that they'll cover this on the next episode of Law and Order?
That'll make for an intresting trial.

Um He should fight the hell out of those tickets that would be like fineing someone for not wearing seatbelts in an old Model T ford which didnt come from the factory with seatbelts... because it was factory equiped it should be grandfathered from the size law... sounds like he got an ignorant cop trying to make his own interperation of the law...

Here's another one for NYS...my neighbour is a transport company and he tells me they just implemented a law that if a commercial truck is kicking up too much snow while passing they can be fined something like $750.00
I travel for biz from NYS to Fld. regulaly and pull flat deck trailers frequently. I learned my lesson early...no signs or commercial plates for those trips. I'm in Ontario and can still register with-out being commercial if your light enough.

NYC Sucks!!!
They have so many laws which are unique to the 5 boroughs, you can often become a criminal when you cross the City line.
When it comes to anything commercial, you have to be permitted for this or licensed for that, all in an effort to collect revenue. I'm sure this is what those tickets are about too. It's funny, many small businesses letter their vehicles with magic markers as a result!
When I drove truck, every truck I took into the City had to have a City permit stuck on the windshield or be subject to fine. That law must have been dropped, because in later years the stickers disappeared.
George, have your friend complain to his Assemblyman and State Senator about this. I'll bet none of the Upstate politicians know this law exists. Maybe your friend can be instrumental in having this law squashed.
NYC issues their own handgun permits and they are next to impossible to get. Without it you are in violation if you carry a hangun in the City. I'm permitted for all of NY except NYC and you must pass through NYC to get to Long Island, so for 6 miles on I-95/295 I became a criminal en route to Long Island. How much sense does any of this make?

GUYS.....Its been different city cops handing out the tickets.
Hes a older guy and knows when to shut up !
His last one a cop tagged him coming out of a bar after
work!
So we are just gonna peel off the stickers...........
Not much work in Syracuse area anyway unless ya wanna
work at Wallyworld! So these fellas gotta travel to make the
$$$$ !
I asked him about getting a lawyer to fight them.
Lawyer sez...NO way around the tickets...ya gotta pay !
Sure stinks tho................geo:mad:

If these stickers/ decals are stock factory applied emblems on the truck, there is no way I would remove them.
If they are after market lettering then thats a different story, but I think you could still fight it and win.
Ive seen some wild types of lettering on commercial truck in NYC, hell Ive seen trucks lettered with permanent magic marker.
The cops have alot more important things to do on a national security basis in NYC, they should be spending their time better, but then again Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly probably need the men and women in blue to bring in some much needed ticket money into the city coffers.

I checked with my lettering guy. The law says any commercial vehicle must have the name of the company as well as the address including town and state and zip on the doors in lettering at least three inches. Telephone number is not required. Anything elsewhere on the truck does not matter. If he has the inclination it seems to be something he can easily win as long as he has the proper lettering on his doors. You do not need a lawyer to fight this type of ticket. Just fill out the back, check not guilty and appear at the hearing. Bring pics of the doors showing proper lettering and, if you have it (or can get one) a receipt for the lettering showing it was done before the ticket was issued.
I'm going to go out on a limb here & assume sonjaab's friend is not telling him the whole or correct story, maybe by accident. If that truck doesn't have the biz name etc. the infraction will probably read with some mumbo jumbo legalese that probably starts with similar to: "failure to secure proper signage with lettering of at least 3" height to ensure visibility from a distance of xyz etc. ... and then finally somewhere along the line it finally says what the sign needs to say, which is the biz name addy & number etc. So when the average person rips the ticket off the window & they are agitated, they start to read that ridiculous sentence I wrote & say WTH? I got a ticket for not having letters 3" tall? NYC sucks! lol And then he repeated that same sentence to sonjaab maybe. That's my guess of the situation here, without seeing the truck, but don't hold me to it.

The law he was ticketed for has to do with comercial plates and parking.Vechicles with commercial plate are allowed to park in loading zones. And some other areas that NON comercial plated vechicles are NOT allowedd to park in.So with the average parking space in NYC going for $8 to $12 an hour or to lease a parking space for $1200.00 a month alot of folks put comercial plate on there cars and took advantage of the law.So they modified the comercial parking law to say you must have 3" lettering with your business name on it and NO BACK SEAT so that why you see these cadillacs,Bmw's you name it running around with comercial lettering on them and the back seat removed.
So I am sure he was ticket for NO COMERCIAL name on the truck not because of the stock lettering.I used to drive a truck in NYC in the earley eighties and was thrilled when they changed the law alot of parking spots opened up for the working stiff like me trying to find open loading zones

Most tickets are NOT issued by the men/women in blue.NYC has its own parking athority police,We used to call them brownies because of there uniforms. They used to get beat up and abused all the time.they now were the same color as the regular men in blue and that eliminated alot of abuse from drivers. They are the folks wrighting the tickets NOT the normal cop on his beat.
As for disputing a ticket it a waste of time.Advice him to pay it and move on If he going to be working in the city have him letter his truck correctly and be thankfull he was not towed. If he doesnt pay the ticket and his truck is seen by the traffic guy or gal and they run his plate they will impound the vechicle as a scoff law and not realise it untill all the fines/penalties plus the towing and storage are paid in full. Also if your vechicle is towed your lucky if you get it back in one peice they are not responcable for damage because there is no way for you to prove it was not damaged from being parked in NYC prior to it being towed.
PAY THE TICKET AND MOVE ON
Its cheaper and easery
In 1998 I got a vanity plate on my car IH82LOSE apprently the fellow who had the plate before me was a scoff law,He had tickets up in the $60,000.00 dollar range.Needless to say a collection ajency was after me for unpaid tickets from 1992 thru 1996 and I had to prove I just got the plates. The collection ajency was very helpfull to me in clearing my new plate from the outstanding fines they actually sent me a noterized letter to put
in my windsheild for when I went into the city to prove my car was not a scoff law car.it seems there system is so slow in updating I was at risk once they cleared it that it may still show up as a scoff law and even if it was towed incorrectly I wouls have had to fight to get it back and still would have had to pay the towing bill

So if you have a chevy Geo that is used for a nurse to get to persons house that is reg. commercial because it is a hospital car then they would get a ticket, for not haveing the name on the side. There is alot of cars here that are reg. commercial but do not have big signs on them and a number of trucks one of my other truck is lettered up but my own personal truck that is used in the business as well is not.
Not sure exactly how the law is written there, but if it is similar to the other states' commercial plates laws that I know of, the nurse's car is supposed to have the company's name etc on the side. If it is a vehicle registered as commercial & has commercial plates, it is supposed to have the signage, though there are plenty of vehicles getting away without having it, due to lack of enforcement. NYC is going to write every ticket they can, its big biz there and they have a whole separate Authority managing it as ih82dovariousdifferentthings posted ;) (Still not sure why he would use Ihatetoplow as his screen name for this plow loving site?? ). And Bloomberg is a business man first & they are dealing with major budget problems. So he is definitely a big fan of enforcing any law on the books that can bring in revenue that can help his budget. And the beauracracy is so huge I agree with ih82's advise, better to pay & be done with it than to cause more problems there.

Fighting a ticket is no big deal. Plead not guilty on the back. They will send you notice of the hearing date. You go and tell your side. That's it. If you know you are right then, why not? Tickets get dismissed all the time.

Are you sure a Police Officer issued that ticket? If so he was the finest, but not the brightest. We also have Traffic Agents in the city. They are VERY UNIQUE :D . I know. I was the line supervisor at the tow pound in Manhattan. They put trucks out of service when it rains so they don't have to go out. They wind up with a command discipline but next time they do it again! Now I'm a District Supervisor in a district mostly comprised of Police vehicles. Most Cops I know will respect the laws of your locale rather than enforce hardship on a visitor, but there are always those guys who put tickets on their Mom's car! Don't give up, fight it, you should win!

Been here for a while and your the first to comment on what my handel means.

Until I read that your license plate means "I hate to lose", I thought you SPC handle had something to do with having a 1982 International Harvester with a plow.

That was my thought too, digger. Guess we're just a couple of old rednecks. We call 'em "cornbinders".
This is kind of funny. I hadn't thought much about it. Like digger242j said, I just figured it had something to do with 1982. Then I saw the "....lose" and started to figure it out - just yesterday. Then I had the same thought - Why plow if you hate it?
Although there has been a couple of times at 4:00 driving through a blinding snowstorm on a dirt road when I can't see past the windshield (let alone where the ditch is), that I wondered why I'm out here. Then a couple of hours later, it's all ok again.:D :cash

I hate to be a thread hi jacker but
A little history on me I have been plowing with my dad since before I was licenced to drive. He owned an escuvating company. He was an owner operator and worked like a dog year round. He is probably still the best operator I have ever had the pleasure to work with BUT he certainly was never a buisness man.And never made any real money plowing he was always just paying the bills.
I Now plow for my own properites that I own.I had found there are too many fellows out there with a pick up truck No liability insurance chargeing lees then there cost to perform plowing services and I stopped plowing to try and earn an income,And just plow my properties to have great service.
I originally found this site by acident while doing a web search for a varidable speed controller for my spreader. And signied up for the forum. And have enjoyed speaking with you guys.
I used to be highley envoulved in a plowing organasation that was dispanned in the earley 80 .We used to have seminars on what it cost to run a plowing for profit company,Seminars on proper insurance, seminars on proper billing and collections. We dispanned because very few showed up for the bi monthly meetings.
So know I only plow my own properties.

My other place is 90 miles away and closed for the winter.
But a bud of mine gives it a push when necessary !
More details on my NYC bud and his tickets to follow when I
see him. I KNOW he is with his family spending his 1 day off
then hes back to NYC !
He sez thank god he will be 55 in a few months and is gonna
retire !..................geo
