Ok here goes the girl friend has a 2001 ford ranger 3.0 with a five speed. she pulled into a parking spot at the store tonight said the truck made a squalling noise then a shudder and the truck died pulling into the spot. I went over and looked at it. the trans wouldnt go in gear at all with it running shut it off goes right in gear no problem as soon as you start it you can feel the truck move with out letting up on the clutch pedal. Called my brother to come drive it to the shop with no clutch it gave him grief for a minute then started shifting fine all the way to the shop. Addtional info its been acting funny going into first and reverse for a few weeks now but other then that we havent had problems with it. Need some ideas as to where to look before i pull the trans out.And i wont let her drive it till its fixed as she works 45 min from home some help would be great

Thanks

Did it feel like the clutch was working when the problem existed? I know the truck moved when the pedal was pushed down, but did it feel like there was normal pedal resistance?

No fluid leaks?

the resistance didnt feel the same when i tried it but my brother said it felt like the clutch was there when he drove it to the shop. the bell housing is wet but the truck has a oil leak we can track down so it could be the rear main. my brother did say it felt like the clutch was slipping on the way to the shop so im leaning toward the slave cylinder.

A leaking slave won't cause the clutch to slip, unless it has coated the plate with oil. It would / may cause hard shifting due to incomplete disengagement of the clutch. Regardless, if you are going to take down the trans, replace everything. parts are generally cheap and if you are planing on keeping the truck, it just makes sense. Check for your rear main leak at the same time. Have fun!

Ron the only reason I was thinking the leaky slave causing the clutch to slip is that the slave is actually on the input shaft so it could easily coat the clutch with oil but the resivor wasnt down on fluid. On edit this truck had a new clutch 5 years ago and has about 200k on it

Incorrect oil type in a hydraulic clutch will cause similar symptoms, (my Dads truck was just in the shop). He has never added oil, but thinks maybe an insty oil change may have "topped it off" at some point??? They drained and flushed it with clean oil, and now its good, no parts!

I have seen that as well. Unfortunately, they used power steering fluid. Swelled the seals, every hydro. part needed replaced.

Anybody have an idea what the actual travel distance is for the slave cylinder?

If you're not losing fluid, and it's intermittent, I would suspect a leaking internal seal in the MC

Started some more diagnosis before taking out the trans and found the MC had a seep around the top pulled it out and disassembled it found a bad cup seal and a seriously scored bore going to start with this and see where it goes. appears as if it was pumping air into the system
