I was at the Ford dealer with my dad the other day where his friend works (right after the chevy crapped out), he said that ford will be putting a "real" allison tranny in the 4-550 models next year. Anyone know anything about it yet?

Yeah, it's an Allison tranny, and it will cost extra.
I never heard of any other Allision trannies though, so if there are fake ones out enlighten us.

I really doubt that Ford would be putting an Allison tranny in any 450-550 trucks anytime soon, the new torqshift 5 speed that comes with the 6.0l diesel is every bit as good ,and possibly better than the allison thats mated to the dmax, why would they want to use one?I believe the allison is commonly used in the 650 and up trucks though.I have heard also of some dealers and salesmen telling people that the 6.0l diesel comes with the allison tranny, not true at all,i guess someone didn't read the factory literature.

This is a rumor I've heard floated in a number of different places, but I've never seen evidence to confirm it.
Food for thought: Allison is owned by General Motors, I'm not sure they'd be willing to sell trannies to their greatest competition. I know you can get them in the 650 and up, but Allison is the only game in town at that point. The Captain is right, Ford's 5 speed auto is very similar in operation to the small Allison.

I heard it would only be offered in the 450-550 in an attempt to seperate them from the 250-350 diesels.
I dont know

Ford and GM have collaborated on the transmission in a cost saving move. All are produced in the midwest and by sharing the tranny they save in supply chain costs.

Just for some reason as good as that may sound ,Why would to competiors do that? I mean it's not like one owns interest in the other or do they??

Maybe it's a trend to come on these series of trucks. The large hwy trucks name on the hood is not always representative of the running gear. Up here we see Mack with Cat engines, Fuller trans, Sterlings with Cummins, Volvo powered GM's and I don't know what other combo's.
Isn't the F-650 available with a Cat option?

The allison rumor has been around for years,so far no one has been able to show any documentation or releases from Ford showing it to be true.Real Allisons do not have park pawls ,that would be an obsticale fo Ford since the 450-550s do not have air brakes.I highly doubt Ford would do something like that in the 450-550 trucks. IF they did,I would hope at that time they would also offer a better diesel engine option,an engine thats easier to work on,one with proven reliability and longer life.

Its almost a certainty that Ford will offer a new diesel in 07. The rumor is a 6.4L with twins  . I too doubt that Ford will be getting into an agreement with allision anytime soon.

John what is a park pawl not trying to be oblivious? You said it might be a problem since they dont have air brakes, but what about the F650 wiht allisons, they dont have air brakes?? Who knows what will happen it was just what the sales rep at our dealer said, although he does know what hes talking about it may be rumour. He also said that the new GT 40 everyone is raving about will be given only to dealers who make the list by having top notch customer service and high sales numbers. He said theyve had two offers of $500,000 for the car that dealers will get for 150k  .
