My first Chevy 4x4 so I'll have some questions for y'all ocasionally! (had a Landcruiser previously) What is meant by "full time 4wd" on the np203? Also "shift on the fly"?

Full time means that the there are no lock out hubs on the front axles therefore the front axle is always engaged.Shifting on the fly means ya can shift into 4wd while moving. I prefer that style while other like the lock outs better due to fuel economy.

This is an '84 that is not original as it had a manual trans before, now an auto, and I don't think it had the 203 originally either???? It does have warn locking hubs on it. I thought that the front driveshaft would always turn being "fulltime" but it doesn't. Can you shift on the fly to any or just to 4HI? 4LO is all the way at the other end of shift pattern. Do you have to stop & shift trans to neutral first or what is the procedure? I think the axles are also non-original. It's a great truck in great shape!!

Put the truck in neutral to shift to 4 Lo. You can shift on the fly to 4 Hi. I wish my 84 was in as good a shape as yours.

Can you see if your transfer case has a cast iron or aluminum case? The "part time" cast iron case is a NP 205. There was another part time version that had an aluminum case, but I can't remember the model number -- maybe NP 208???

The shift pattern (from Chucks site) gave me the idea that it was a 203, then I crawled under and found a tag on it that verified it.
