Thank you Ray for your advice, I apreciate your prompt reply to my PM.
I am wondering how those of you with Western Low Profile (2000, 1000, and 500 models) spreaders like them. I am looking at getting a 500 model. It is brand new, comes with all the hitch and straps, but only an on/off control, which I would sell and buy a variable speed, but what do you think the fair cost of this unit should be, and how much can I negociate the cost? We all do it with the car dealers, can you play a similar game here?
I was verbally "quoted", a price of "$500 and change, Mr. Koenig really wants to get rid of this, it has been sitting for almost two years." on friday of last week. I told him I'd think about it, when I came back Monday, he told me it was going to be $656 +tax. I'd like to get it for only $5xx, but at teh same time, everyone wants to make money....
Do I have the right to argue the price due to him quoting me lower at one point? Or, should I just suck it up and pay the already discounted (or so I'm told) price?
Thanks for any help guys.

" Is That The Best You Can DO? " Thats what I would say to him. Yes I would mention to him he quoted a lower price. Hell for another couple hundred you can get a Buyers 600 pound tailgate spreader.

John some of the smaller spreaders that don't come with the varible speed units will not run properly if you install the varible controls on them afterwards.
Has some thing to do with the type of motors used on some of them.
I don't know about the one your looking at.
What are you looking for in your new spreader as far as size and type of mount?
 John.......................

I have heard the 500 unit is a little under-powerd and like garagekeeper said switching to the varible speed unit cause problems.

John- I'm looking at the 500, and Western shows that they are available with a variable speed controller, also Ray (justusde) said his works just fine with the variable speed, I just assumed it would be ok. I would keep it at about 50% most of the time, I don't want to spread a full 40', thats my main concern.
I think I'll do what you said Walt, its funny with these guys, if you don't spend $80,000 per year there, they don't treat you like they value your business.....If there was another dealer within a reasonable distance, I'd go there, undoubtedly. I'll just have to call the owner, see if he remembers me, I hope he does.

I am a little suspicious about this particular dealer that is trying to sell the spreader. You said that he said the spreader has been sitting for almost two years. I don't see that to be possible because I know that Fisher just released a new Model 500 this season. Since Fisher and Western are sisters company, I'd bet that Western Model 500 also got released this season too. So what I am saying is that it cannot be possible that spreader is almost two years old if they are just recently released in the market.
Have you seen the spreader yet, because I honestly do not believe that this spreader is all brand new for that price. This same spreader would sell at Fisher/Western dealer for $1000-$1300 brand new, so I don't see why this guy would sell it really cheap if it really is brand new.
I am not trying to pounce down this deal, but I just want to give you a fair warning that you should at least look through the unit carefully before making the deal. If all else is good, then go for it! Just remember that you probably would only be able to use dry bagged straight salt with this spreader.

I've seen it several times, and fiddles withit a couple as well. Its brand new, controls, harness, instructions and plug are still wrapped in the original plastic bag. You can easliy tell that this has not been used, however, there is enough dust onit to make me think its at least almost a year old.
I thought the same thing about the 2 year claim, but if that's the reason they want to get rid of it, I'm not going to screw myself by saying that its not that old... Ya know?
I'm going to call them and offer them a little less, just to see if they'll negotiate, if not, I think its still a pretty good deal.

What size lots do you do? For a little more money I think a bit bigger unit may suite you better.
