I am going to fabricate some rear shock mounts for my '85 3/4 T K20 Suburban. Is 3/16" steel thick enough?

3/16" is a little thin ¼" would be better IMO. if you are using air shocks then no less then 5/16" preferably 3/8"

Upper or lower mount? If it's the lower mount buy a rear shock mount for a Superduty from the Ford dealer. It is a bolt on item that you can just weld on. I have used them and they are cheap and work great.

Uh, Ford dealer, this is a Chevy Forum. Bolt on Item that you can just weld on. Think about what you saying 'bolt on item', 'weld on' hmmm.

I know it's a GM forum. STFU.
OK here it is again for the so called goodwrenchers out there

Buy a rear lower shock mount from Ford for the current Superduty trucks. It is a bolt on bracket that uses a U bolt to attach to the axle tube. Don't buy the bolt kit with it just the bracket and weld it on the tube in the location you need. I have used them in the front axle as well to replace broken lower shock mounts
