What is everyone? I figured I'd make a poll.
Owner operator, 1 truck.
2 trucks
4 - 6 trucks
municipal, State, or County employee?

This year I am only one truck, although I have a buddy that I throw work when I can't get back out (say for a residential cleanup after the city came by).
I'm trying to add another truck for next year, hopefully I'll have enough work, and more importantly, a good driver....

I am solo, owner operator with one truck and plow, both new. :D I currently am doing residential snowplowing, but might possibly look into a few small commercial accounts in future, but that will depend on my future full time career. ;)

one truck owner/operator with a few subs & stand by when needed.
Currently doing high end resi. work with one or two laborors on board to handle the blower, shovels & salting. Still looking for a few small lots to get a taste of the commercial end. If it doesn't happen this year, still have plenty of resi work to do this season.

After 15 years of it, I gave up the all night thing, 24-7, only have about an hours worth of drives close to home then head to the shop to fix the stuff the all-nighters broke. Maybe when the kids start driving (scary) i will put another truck on to keep them busy.

Yes gordyo, you would fall under State et al...
I was just trying to get an idea of the demographics (scary word at times) of the membership. It certainly takes all kinds, and I wanted to see just what kinds they are.
So far it looks like we have many 1 truck operators, that want to grow. Hopefully, with these Forums, you will all grow faster, and with a shorter learning curve than your competition.
I get an e mail, whenever a new member registers here, and I was surprised to see quite a few on the State, and Municipal level. I am glad they are here, as they can share their experiences with the rest of us that do the same work, on a different level.
Not to single anyone out, but GeoffD is a wealth of knowledge. He used to run a bunch of his own trucks and equipment, and now he is doing it on a Municipal level. I always enjoy reading his replies to threads.

I didn't realize how many guys here were owner operators. Sometimes I think you guys have the right idea, I was talking to a buddy of mine who just downsized from 3 trucks to 2. I thought he was crazy cause I just added another Cat hoe and 2 more trucks and 2 more salters and 2 more snowblowers. That brings my grand total to 11 trucks, 3 hoes, 8 salters, 12 snowblowers.
3 pickups right now, two with spreaders, one with a pull plow in addition to front plows on all three. One dump truck with 5 ton capacity and spreader, which will (hopefully, at last) get a plow mounted this year.
I'm the 24/7 person and have several part time drivers for the pickups, I only trust me in the 5500. It's old and has it's quirks, I can live with them, somebody else might try to beat them out of it.

1 Truck with Boss V, with tailgate spreader. Have a back-up if I need one. A few Residental, a few commercial. I sub myself out if I get bored:D or if my buddy gets busy. I am basically happy with the amount I have, I really don't want any more or grow where I need more trucks.
Two trucks, two plows and a Vbox. I'm the only operator. I have some drives where I prefer the 7.5' and some roads/lots where I prefer the 9' so switch back and forth.
Next will probably be a V-plow.

My other truck is only two wheel drive and although it is a 3/4 ton, and has plenty of weight in the back I don't think it will support a plow this year- might do some mods and try it next year for doing lots.

I hope you mean units for trucks Chuck, cause this year instead of a new truck I went to a Case IH MX100 4x4 tractor, after pricing new pickups, and finding it was going to cost about 50K, where a new tractor with a loader is about 70K, and will last for years, plus the tax man is real easy when writing a tractor off, but considers that a pickup could be used for personal use, and I have to keep records to prove it's strictly for business.:canada

Two trucks, one driver. 88 Ford F350 dump, Western Salter and Fisher Speedcast, augmented with 96 Dodge 2500 with a Western. Usually 8-10 hours per storm. 7 Years, still love it.

I like the slow retirement , wind down, spent the last 15 years building a large route using loaders, backhoes, drags and finally I've found the warm dry cab, can still hear the radio and can really start picking the nice jobs, no speed bumps, good paving, little to no parking lots, flexable hours, and PAY right away. My buddy who is building now can have all my other jobs and is trying to expand, I still help cover some times but I've gotten soft, have a nice real job, pays well but still lets me take some time off to play in the snow.... and thats the fun part, watching the powder fly at 4AM with a full moon popping outa the clouds, the time when the fools are off the road and the whole place is yours. I like my V-plow, it's a 9'3" snoway and has been ok but getting parts is pricy, anybody have any cross referances for shoes?

Just a few, not many. I do 2 small lots down in Orange, I do a couple neighbors driveways, my sisters driveway and my brothers driveway once in a while. Oh, I also do a small driveway in West Orange for some older lady. I cant really take on too much, because I have a full time job at my fathers repair shop and I cant just leave if were busy to go do snowplowing, even though Id love to. So, I only do as much as I can do without disappointing anyone. My neighbors know the situation and Im to do their driveways when I get home from work, if they didnt do them themselves already with a shovel or a snowblower. Its like with my sister, her husband has a brand new snowblower, but he would rather pay me to plow it and leave the snowblower sitting in the garage, but if he has to go somewhere and cant wait, he will snowblow it and be done with it. Sometimes he will just do enough of it to get out and let me come do the rest and finish it off, which is fine with me. I would never take on too much and then not be able to do it all, or not get there when they would want me to because I work my full time job 7am-4pm. Like I said though, I love snowplowing, but Im limited to who I can snowplow for. Mike :)

I'm a one man band been that way for a long time. Snow in our coastal area is not a guarantee. I've had as many as 45 paying accounts and a bunch of widows and neighbors I do as "freebies" I cut back to 20 or so for awhile. Got the new rig and better hardware this year to increase the efficency.
Then my younger brother retired one of his 3 trucks and I picked up some of the better accounts. I now have 12 small to medium commercial accounts, and 20 residential drives. With the addition of the Daniels this week I'm going to add 10 more drives to the mix.
I'm just one of those snow junkies who started as kid with a shovel, then a snowplower. I was fortunate to own my own business which allowed me to let others run it during the storms so I could go out and recharge my batteries. I was able to merge my business with another and I "retired" when I was 47. I've been doing computer work since my first desktop machine (1981) and now do a fair amount of web design and web marketing. BUT deep inside is the kid who likes to play in the snow.
I do it right, keep good care of my equipment and pay outrageous premiums for my liability insurance (especially considering that a good years is 6 or 7 plowable storms)

3 owner/operator trucks here , two blazers and a backup truck (see signature below) (and avatar). The backup is my daily driver and our business is a father/son joint venture , you know son works , father watches.....just kidding . Mostly private cottage roads and residential driveways , not much for commercial lots around here in cottage country..also a plow in the works for my atv in the near future(still figuring things out how to build it):weld :canada

The three that are listed in my signature plus an old Ford 4400 farm tractor with a loader up front. She sure comes in handy during those larger storms.

Seems like there should be a category of "I'm tired and discouraged". Just not having a fun time this year. December '03 kinda broke my back with recordbook storms and truck problems and I find I'm haven't been psyched up about it since then. In all seriousness this may be my last year as a full timer.

I know the feeling Alan. This season started off bad with breakdowns, short on help--mainly because a large customer wouldn't give an answer about what they were going to do--and me beng Mr Mom because of my wife's foot surgery. I was about at wit's end and then thankfully, the snow shut off for a couple weeks. Getting equipment back up and running, employees are back from hunting\Christmas\etc vacations, adding a couple employees and getting a new sidewalk rig from Jerre next week and hopefully things will start looking up.
I see I voted but never answered the question.
