I have an 84 K-20 with the four speed granny tranny. It features a cover plate shifter. I am having problems removing the shifter arm so that i can drop the trans. if some one has dealt with this before please help

If you remove the shifter boot you should see a locking cap at the bottom of the shifter. This cap is locked in place by tension of a spring on the shifter and two roll pins on the top of the trans tower. To remove the shifter you have to press down(about 1/4" to 3/8") on the cap and turn it counter-clockwise(the cap only, not the shifter). These can be very frustrating to remove, so put a little WD-40 down there and get a good pair of channel locks that can push down and turn at the same time. Sometimes putting the transmission in 4th gear or reverse can help get the shifter out of your way more so you can get the channel locks on. When the cap finally comes off shift into neutral and the shifter should come out. I hope this helps.
