Haven't layed sod in over ten years. Something we don't normally do but have a customer that really wants it. Area is 2,700 sf. Sparse fescue right now with bare spots from the cust's dog making a race track out of it. Told cust gong to have same prob down the road and won't look pretty forever but doesn't seem to mind. My plan is to glyphosate area. Wait 10-14 days. Apply topsoil to smooth grade. Lay sod. Apply starter fert. Am I missing anything? Thought about renting a sod cutter to get rid of established turf but very sparse and feel it would be waste of time and $.

I think sod will be coming from Beck's. At least that is the only one I can remember that delivers up here. I remember their shady mix sod being mostly KBG:rolleyes:

Depending on soil compaction from the dog, I'd at minimum aerate the heck out of it before laying the sod.

Maybe even till it lightly somehow.

harley rake

X2. It will chew up the little turf you have, aerate and grade all at the same time.

harley rake

I was trying to think of something that would fit on a 2700 sq ft area. Maybe one of those walk behind harley's would work, but trying to fit a tractor or skid steer with a harley is going to be tough.

Harley rake would do the job but it's the backyard. All cyclone fenced with 2 gates 3-4' wide. We get to wheelbarrow all the sod.:( Aerating it is a good idea. I'll add that in.

Rent one of those small Toro dingo's or one like that. They make harley rakes for them and you can also put forks on them to move pallets of material around. They'll fit through a 4' gate easily.

I've been using this setup all season. We have put down over 20,000 sf of sod using this method.

I used this tool last year for the Dingo. My Toro dealer let me demo it, actually he did the work for me. It does a nice job of getting rid of the existing turf.

check to see if your sod place has 4 ft rolls of sod and an adapter for the dingo to carry the rolls. that way there is less handling of the sod, and the dingo does more work.
